Former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has been dismissed from the police force.
A statement signed by police spokesman, Akpoebi Agberebi, confirmed Ribadu’s sack, this afternoon. He was sacked for indiscipline, insurbordination and absence from duty. Ribadu was one of the six police officers nominated and sent on senior executive course at NIPSS, Kuru, Jos.
While on course, he was demoted to the rank of DCP along with 139 officers, who were allegedly wrongfully promoted. According to a statement signed by Akpoebi, the act of misconduct levelled against Ribadu are improper dressing when he appeared before the president on 13 November, with other NIPSS participants, in plain clothes, where others were properly dressed.
He was also accused of instituting legal proceedings against the Inspector-General of Police, AG and the Police Service Commission, at a Federal High Court in Lagos, without proper authority from government.
These conducts, the statement added, are prejudicial to discipline, proper administration of the force and unbecoming of an officer, contrary to sections 352 and 367 of the Police Act and against Rules 030402 of the Police Service Rules 2006.
Ribadu was also accused of flagrantly disobeying the order and directive of the IG to report to the Force Headquarters on 24 November, along with his NIPSS coursemates, at the completion of their studies.
Furthermore, Ribadu was said to have disregarded his posting order and refused to proceed on transfer when he was posted to zone 5, Benin, as deputy commissioner of police in charge of administration, since 21 November, contrary to sections 349, 348 and 347 of the Police Act.
“Serious misconduct is a specific act of various wrongdoings and improper behaviours, and which is inimical to the image of the service and which can be investigated and if proven, will lead to dismissal. At the end of deliberations, the commission dismissed the officer from the force for acts of gross indiscipline, insubordination and absence from duty, acts singularly and collectively punishable under rules 03, 04,01 of the Public Service Rules 2006,” the statement read.

23 December 2008 16:17This deceision, I’m sure , did not catch we Nigerians unaware as we already saw it coming right from the day of his demotion. 48yrs old Nigeria still retrogress those whose work and achievement are found commendable by majority Nigerians. Whether sack, humiliated, ridiculed or relegated we still appreciate his achievement while he was the chairman EFFC. HIS TREMENOUS ACHIEVEMENT LIKE A MIGHTY OCEAN WILL NEVER BE COMPARED WITH ORDINARY WATER IN THE CALABASH.

23 December 2008 16:17We knew where they were heading to. It will not surprise me if Ribadu is arrested tomorrow. It is laughable that a Lucky Igbinedion that stole so much from Edo State coffer was only fined 3.5m Naira. The EFCC later withdrew the numerous charges and replaced them with only charge and cried blue murder after the judgment was delivered. We cannot deceive everybody. My advice to Mr Okiro is that he should face more pressing and urgent issues like crime curbing instead of dissipating more energy on irrelevancies.

23 December 2008 16:20Stale news! Under another government, Ribadu would realize that these trials are blessings in disguise. Wasn’t the same Parry Osayande disgracefully retired from the Police Force at one time? But today in another government he is the all-powerful chairman of PSC. I wonder what those who said Ribadu was selective in his prosecution of corruption during his time would now say about the witch-hunting that is now the order of the day at the EFCC. Nowadays, if I have a disagreement with someone (even over a girl) and I have contacts at EFCC, the next thing is to frame him up and get him arrested. Out of the 36 states in Nigeria, EFCC focusses only on River State because of the petition the state Governor wrote against the Antorney General and the EFCC Chairman over their failed attempt to extort money from the Governor. EFCC has now declared El-Rufai wanted over demolition of illegal structure. The people that are being hunted are the ones seen as not to be in the good books of Yar Adua. So who is fooling who?

23 December 2008 16:54We are not surprised! We saw it coming. However, the power that be should remember that he who gathers ant-infested wood has invited the lizard to a feast. Nuhu worked with singleness of purpose as the Chairman of EFCC, but what he got for it is the show of shame the Nigeria Police and the presidency have exhibited. What goes around comes around as the saying goes. Nigeria as a country should not expect patriotism and hard work from its citizens, if the reward for hard work is harassment and dismissal from service. May God help us!

23 December 2008 16:59This is truely a wicked world and this country a wicked one for that matter. I know it was going to end this way and the litigations will drag fro some time.but our leaders are just doing whatever pleases them. What on earth can be compaed to a clean society that this man in question tried to make out of our grossly poluted environment ? His major offence was that he fought corruption to a meanigful stage, and now all this country can offer him is dismisal. Well the greatest and fairest judge which is the judge of all will see to the matter of this nation one day and one thing that is certain is that no sinner will go unpunished. All our leaders will face the jugement either they like it or not.

23 December 2008 17:08Ribadu got what he deserve. Please let it be on record that Ribadu did not fight curruption in Nigeria. He only did Obasanjo’s bidding. It’s a pity tthat instead of accounting for his tenure in office, he decided to take shelter in the LAW COURT that he gave no regard to while he was EFCC chairman.
Let not forget that Ribadu is first of all a Policeman before being made the EFCC chairman. He has never had any regards for any IG because he thought he would remain forever under the cover of OBASANJO. Who is he to choose where to serve, how to dress and who’s summon he should honour.
This is a lession for all to beware of being use to fight dirty in the muky waters of Nigerian politics. He was so blinded by power that he did could not read bewteen the line.

23 December 2008 17:09today, i cried for Yar ‘Adua. it is now a clear fact that we are being govern by evil doers. firstly, my question goes to those idiots called themselves psc. where were they when Ribadu was promoted? secondly, why didnt them take action immediately? these questions are the reasons why i cried for Yar Adua. i want to assure all nigerians today you can quote me it is not a curse we can never achieve any better under Yad Adua. He is a fool, an idot, a pun and puppet, He is an embodiment of confusion( from my experience from his recent re-shuffle) by making Akunyili Minister of Information.
Infact, these recent happenings are the reasons why sometimes i find it so hard to be proud as a nigerian. well i want Ribadu to take heart ( nitoripe o be). He should have known that Nigeria is not worth dying for. but if Yar Adua continue like this he will end up being disgraced like his father(Obasanjo) i am not even sure is from Musa Yar Adua family we used to know.

23 December 2008 17:22This is telling our leaders to lead according to the rule of law and order, not according to the master who pays the piper that dictate the tune. Obasanjo promoted Ribadu rapidly because he Obasanjo used him to victimize his enemy and succeeded. That is Nigeria for you al. But my prayer is that everyday is for the thief and one day for the owner, when Nigerians will go for mass revolution to clear all foolish leaders, election riggers and all vices associated to running Nigeria state. 23 December 2008 17:40So what if he is dismissed from the Police force? An institution is bigger than any individual. First and foremost, Ribadu was a police man before his appointment to the office of the Chairman of the EFCC. So, why would he breach the rules and regulations of that institution (Police force) as if it does not matter? Secondly, it would appear to me that some people are just being emotional about the whole thing without giving a serious thought to the effect his misconduct would have on other officers and the entire force if disciplinary measures were not taken. Are we saying that because he was a former EFCC cahirman, therefore he should not be disciplined when the rules are breached by him? Finally, the lession for every one in this saga is that, when you find yourself in a position of authority, do not abuse it like Ribadu did. He started well but became a politician in that office towards the tail end of his tenure. And i think he deserves the sack and even more. Let us not make it look as if the war against corruption can not be fwon without him. Nigeria is a country of about 90 million or so and Ribadu is just an individual out of this number.

23 December 2008 17:46Those who are saying Ribadu is stubborn do not appreciate the working of the Nigerian system in recent days as it affects the status of this young man: whether or not he succumb to the dictate of the so-called IG or the Police Commission; I have it in my mind that the road is bleaked for Ribadu.
And he too knows that; so it is better that way at least he is going with some sort of honour for taking the unprecendented legal battle against the forces of darkness!

23 December 2008 17:46It is unfortunate things happen this way in Nigeria. I once read in a daily newspaper about the threat of a former Governor, whose case is still under so-called investigation and prosecution by the EFCC, categorically said that Ribadu will be removed as the EFCC Chairman, followed by his dismissal from the police Force. He will then be arrested and jailed by the EFCC. From all indications, these ‘promise’ is fully coming to pass…..Very unfortunate. One wonders how Nigeria will progress under this retrogressive approaches.

23 December 2008 18:35Justice is like a sharp sword that pierces ‘fufu’ on a straight part. Pre-ordinances cannot be changed into the law of children. Suffice it to say that the Police rank is not bestowed as a gift to the members but on merit. Discipline is enumerated in the Police Acts and Regulations so that every serving member is amenable to it. “He is a cadet” has failed to exornerate him in this case. Even if being hunted, at the level he was carried to, he supposed to have been disciplined while still in service.

23 December 2008 18:36Weep not Ribadu. You are a true champion of fighting corruption. You showed Nigerians that corruoption can be fought. Its just unfortunate that the man (Ya Adua) who was a direct benefit of your struggle and fight has made himself friends of his ‘enemies” . Whether Yar Adua realise it or not, it was your reports that silenced the likes of Ibori, Odili at PDP convention and paved way for Yar Adua to win PDP prewsidential ticket. Its just that what is happening to Ribadu is a bad omen. It showed that the elites in government are enemy of anybody who is a true friend of Nigeria but this wil not last forever. Ribadu you are our true champion. The truth will always prevail agains falsehood and corruption. We the true Nigerian who have sincere love for our great Nation are solidly behind you. 23 December 2008 18:39I wish Ribadu had applied wisdom in handling this matter. He played into the hands of his adversaries. No man can be bigger than the establishment that hired him.Where is Obj to deliver you now.He did a good job but he allowed Obasanjo to use him to accomplish his own mission.
He got a reward of promotion he does not deserve.Ribadu did not realise that not everyone will be happy for the promotion. His senior in the force and his colleagues which he suddenly became their boss will never be happy. It is natural that they will react.Yet he allowed all this to go into his head.I wish he can be more humble and wiser in his approach to issues like this.

23 December 2008 19:03This Ribadu guy interests me. When he was EFCC chairman, it was sacrilege to go to court to prevent an unlawful arrest. Yet he is doing exactly that. My question remains : why won’t you go to answer to allegations against you? Everybody wanted to crucify Iyabo Obasanjo when she refused to appear before EFCC to clear her name. Ribadu is doing exactly that and he is a hero! There are petitions against you and you are invited to state your case. Your response? They want to kill me. How many people did you kill when you were issuing those invitations? I have not seen a single act of injustice against Mr Ribadu. If you disobey summons, there are sanctions. Ribadu is pathetic. Obasanjo has used and ruined a man who could have been an authentic hero. A big lesson for us all on the use of power.

23 December 2008 19:15SHAME, SHAME, SHAME ON Yar Adua’s government. Reward the criminals and shame those that are hard working, sincere and
credible. Your government has now showed it’s true color -that it’s nothing but a SHAM.
I don’t see this government going anywhere with all the confusion in the government. You have once again failed the country.
Ribadu, You’re still our hero and will one day triumph over all these crooks that are now having a field day.

23 December 2008 19:22TO ME , I THINK ALL OF THERE STARTED FROM YAR ADUA.. HE KNEW WHAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN .FIRSTLY HE SENT HIM TO THAT SCHOOL IN KUJE AFTER DOING THAT HE PROMISED NIGERIANS THAT RIBADU WILL BE BACK AFTER HIS COURSE .. NOW WHAT HAPPENED AFTER THAT…. HE HAS BEEN SACK… TO ME I THINK YAR’ADUA HAS A HAND IN THIS.

23 December 2008 19:26It is sad to hear that the Ngerian police force has dismissed Ribadu. I weep for Nigeria. The interpretation of this all is that corruption is here to stay in Nigeria. Nigerian should rise up against this government. The current government is laden with corrupt men and women. Nigeria will never progress with the kind of police force we have. I weep for my country

23 December 2008 19:35Obasanjo is the cause of all this wahala.
He had no good plans for Nigeria apart from self succession, so when that failed he foisted Yaradua on us (a sick man) and used Ibori’s stolen money to rig the election. So today Ibori has become the king maker and anybody that disturbs the king’s friend courts trouble.
If Obasanjo the Ribadu helped by giving a good face in fight against corruption had good plans for Nigeria Ribadu wouldnt be going thru all these.
Ashiwaju was a thief and still is but he was VERRRY wise to get a good successor in FASHOLA and see what he is enjoying today. Foshola is doing what he knows best how, (working hard) and Ashiwaju is also doing what he knows best how (cleaning out).
OBJ should be blamed for his selfish visionless rule and unfortunately Ribadu that enjoyed then is beign persecuted now.

23 December 2008 19:38Ribadu deserved this punishment. Infact, he should be arrested for deserting the police force without permission and sent to jail. Ribadu is very proud and he has seen where it has led him to. Congratulations, the Police force, you have shown that the law is no respecter of anyone. As a Police Officer, he is subject to both the Police laws and Nigerian laws

23 December 2008 20:04If Ribadu is selective, I think he started somewhere and somehow. Its left for Okiro and others to do their best on corruption issues in Nigeria instead of chasing out Ribadu. Okiro I strongly believe is a twin brother to Tarfa Balogun.and he will also be disgraced like Tarfa. Generally, Nigerian Police Force takes the lead on corruption in Nigeria follow by NEPA and God will visit them one after the other.

23 December 2008 20:35quite a number of these comments are too passionate and refuse to acknlwledge the real issues agianst Ribadu. Are we saying the police should accomdate gross indiscpline, insurbordination and the likes. And for those seeing Ribadu as a hero, i think they should check out the dictionary meaning of an hero. Ribadu got enmeshed in politics, rather that do EFFC work, he was busy playing politics and fighting corruption on the pages of the dailies without action. the only established cases he prosecuted - alams and dariye were initiated abroad.
We need to be sincere and dispassionate in our views.

23 December 2008 20:48Why is everybody ending his writeup with “God save Nigeria” or “God help us”. How can God save Nigeria when the people themselves are not doing anything in the right direction to save themselves. God only help those who help themselves. God will not come down from his throne to minister Nigeria, it is Nigerians that will do the job. The popular latin saying is “ora et labora” (which means work and pray). If we continue praying alone without doing the necessary work in the right direction, the prayer cannot and will not be answered. In fact with the way Nigeria is being governed now, the country called Nigeria is already presumed dead only waiting to be buried.

I refer you to the address that was read on his behalf at Obafemi Owolowo University without his Knowledge. It shows he is not incharge. If he loves our country,he should resign and take care of his health. He is not fit to rule our complex country.Ribadu dismissed? Na waa oohhh. It is a shame.while there are cases of our citizens being killed everyday by armed robbers, kidnappers, our IG is chasing shadow. In a civilised society what happened in Jos is enough for him to resign honourably.

23 December 2008 20:51When will Nigerians stop mixing sentiments with core issues? Should injustice be meted with injustice? Ribadu has died by the same sword he had killed with. He should have known better being a lawyer. If he had assumed and executed his role as EFCC chair with respect to the law, he would not be in this mess. Now he wants to run to the law he violated… He’s been used and dumped !
Kill by the sword, die by the sword.

23 December 2008 20:54The sack of Ribadu is not surprising - we all know that the Nigerian Police is corrupt and do not appreciate the fact that we could still have a quintessential police man in Nigeria in the mould of Ribadu.
What’s surprising is that a President who was originally acclaimed as a disciplined and honest governor could so brazenly work against the anti corruption campaign. Definitely, this man (Yar ‘ Adua) is not known by Nigerians. He surely has a lot more up his sleeves.
May God save Nigeria and Nigerians

23 December 2008 21:13My yoruba people say and I quote “Olooto kii l’eni” which simply means, a truthfull somebody will not have a permanent abode. Ribadu has come and added his quota to the development of this country. It is shamefull that we Nigerians at 48 still embraces darkness instead of light. Can we compare Ribadu with the likes of James Ibori, Tafa Balogun, Alamieyesiegha, and the lot? Can’t we compare and contrast their works. Ribadu, wherever you are, the Almighty God you serve shall definitely lift you up against all odds. This may be your trying period, but one day (sooner than we expect), victory from Allah shall come. Just be prayerful.

23 December 2008 21:15Now that the EFCC in strict collusion with the powers that be, has decided to dismiss Mallam Ribadu from the police force, it is left to Mallam Nuhu Ribadu come out of his psychological hideout and tell the whole world the role that was played covertly or overtly by his former Boss, former President Obasanjo in the design and execution of all that he (Ribadu) did when he was the chairman of the EFCC.
If Mallam Ribadu fails to leak out whatever his former boss did that emboldened him to do all that he did, good or not so good, posterity will not forgive him for his pathological silence. Unquestionably, Mallam Ribadu could not have done whatever he did without the knowledge and approval of his own boss.
Mallam Ribadu, the ball is now fully in your court. Remove the veil from your face and tell the world the extent of your former boss in your activities when he put you in charge.

23 December 2008 21:37I have been wondering why the Police leadership has dissipated so much energy fighting Ribadu. Armed robbers have since taken over, announcing when and where next they will strike; operating between 8am and 1pm because they no longer require the cover of darkness to operate; killing policemen like chicken, and lately, even killing soldiers! The rank and file are busy collecting 20 naira tolls at numerous, dangerous “wooden-log” toll-gates, and the leadership fighting the “big enemy “Ribadu. The IG and his cohorts should resign or be fired; Nigeria had never descended to this abyss of insecurity until his tenure.

23 December 2008 22:08It ius very sad that Ribadu a young promising Nigeria who may one day have ended up as the inspector General of the Police, allowed some sundry noise makers and pseudo anarchists to push him into a confrontation that could at the end of the day only have one result!! After he was transered out of EFCC and sent to Kurur these noise makers made so much noise and I think even Ribadu began to allow himself some delusions of grandeur. I want to use this medium to ask these noise makers and Ribadu himself some questions. Does Ribadu’s employers, The Federal Government not have the right to send their employee from one post to another? I have never seen any employment contract which would strip the employer of the right to control it’s employee. To me he should have simply gone to Kurur without much ado and he should have told the press who were trumpeting his percoeved travails that as a public servat he is ready to serve the nation in whatever capacity the nation chooses for him to serve. After all he was already in employment long before EFCC was created. The issue of demotiion was another poorly handled disaster for Ribadu. If he had chosen to go to court, he should have let the court go on with the case while he quietly dorned on his new rank. In the military/para-military the rule is ober before complaint! If military and para militaryofficers are given the power to challenge theo orders of their superiors in court then i just wonder what would become of the service? A general tells an officer there are foreign invaders attacking Nigeria lead pout some men to confront them and the next thing he does is to serve the General a Writ of Summons seeking an injunction to stop him from being sent to war!!?? One last question for all the conspiracy theory spinners - If Obasanjo was really fighting corruption with Ribadu in charge, how come they got a supposedly corrupt Ibori(as the story of the spinners go) to bank roll the (s)election of Yaradua and a president handpicked by the supposedly corruption fightinh Obasanjo is now haubting an anti corruption czar? It is all so confusing to me o!!

The scepter of the wicked will not remain over the land allotted to the righteous, for then the righteous might use their hands to do evil.
Do good, O LORD GOD to those who are good, to those who are upright in heart (Mallam Nuhu Ribadu). But those who turn to crooked ways (Mike Okiro) the LORD will banish with evildoers (James Ibori & co). Peace be upon you”, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, Amen!

23 December 2008 23:12sentiments apart, ribadu dug his own grave. the guy projects the impression that he is an intelligient officer, but unfortunately, he is so tactless. if ribadu was the igp, he would not even have given some1 else misbehaving like him the opportunity to be heard by a panel. he allowed the gani fawehinmis of this world to mislead him and painted obasanjo as a saint. an sure obasanjo can now employ him as the chief security officer on his farm. how could an officer in the police force blatantly refuse to honour his oga’s invitation and refuse to report for duty. sometimes, i wonder what the man takes himself for. he thinks that he is an entity bigger than nigeria simply because he was given a chance to seve in the police force.this will teach other overzealous pple in govt a lesson. obasanjo has used him and dumped hin like is chracteristic of him. no one supports thiefing politicians, but ribadu did not understand how to deal with the isues. calling ress conferences abusing politicians, judges and even the police force through cheap media propaganda is not the way to wage war against corruption. the next time he has a chance to serve, am sure he will take it modesly and not be unduly hasty in his spirit.

24 December 2008 00:15We should know that for us to achieve change in this country, we need a Ribadu. We are only postponing that change. History will surely bring us another Ribadu in the nearest future. Nigeria dont despair. No situation is permanent for change is constant. God is with us. This stealing must stop. We must grow and develop, therefore corruption must be stamped out in our psyche. We must move forward and that is why history by the grace of God will give us the desired change of bringing another Ribadu in the future to stampout corruption. Those acting as stumbling block will be consumed soon in the dark side of history.

24 December 2008 00:39A country like Nigeria where corrupt public office holders like Kalu, Odilli, Nnammani, Saminu Turaki, Ibori and a host of others have perpetual court injunction preventing their arrest/prosecution while hounding and persecuting Ribadu is perpetually cursed, she can never rise above her present ruin and depravation, she will forever wallow at the bottom of social development index ladder in the comity of nations, I am ashamed to be a Nigerian today. Gradually we are beginning to appreciate and fully understand what Yaradua’s government stands for; incidentally, he has the same first name of Shehu as Shagari, both are indeed fellow co-travelers in Nigeria’s leadership sinking boat. Curiously though most lawyers seem to be happy and indeed jubilant about Ribadu’s current travail, it is not entirely surprising because most are benefiting and taking money from corrupt public officials to defend them, in other parts of the civilized world, such lawyers will be in jail. Most Nigerian Lawyers are crooks; they benefit largely from stolen funds hence their collaboration with the looters. Indeed, Nigeria gets the leadership she deserves

24 December 2008 09:45Ibrahim Garba,
I suspect you are just disguising your identity here. You must be a high ranking police officer involved in these decisions against Ribadu, or your relative or even yourself must have been hit by Ribadu’s war against corruption, and now you think it’s payback time. Take a statistics of the comments in this forum. You’ll find that Ribadu won the fancy of the majority of Nigerians. Of those Ribadu prosecuted, who can you point out as innocent. Is it Alamco (my ex-governor) or Tafa (OBJ’s boy)? If you don’t know, you better know it now that it’s just a matter of time, and Ribadu will be back in a GRAND STYLE!

24 December 2008 10:09I pity Ribadu as a person. However, i want people to note that the present problem being faced by him
is Obasanjo’s imposed.
How do you put someone in a position and still dictate to him what he should do?
The only fault i see was when it was glaring that OBJ was using him, Ribadu did not bow out.
With the good work he did investigating Bode George case, and his good recommendation, why did he stay when they told him
George is under PDP immunity? Is he a president?
If corruption must be fought, it must be with pure mind, not halfhearted.
Obj was compesating ribadu for every enemy destryed with ranks in police.
Truly, Police has its own way of promoting staff, it shouldnt be by presidential compesation.
Obasanjo’s ranks for ribadu are chieftaincy tittles that was given outside the rule of law.
He did some good job, but not with a perfect heart like some kings in the bible.
I love Ribadu, But he is paying for allowing himself to be dubiously used by Obj.
Even that man, OBJ has questions to answer.
