August 20, 2008 18:51, 3,645 views
Director-General of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, Ndi Okereke-Onyiuke, has been arrested by the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission,EFCC, over her role in the controversial N100million fundraiser, which she and her group claimed was meant to support the candidacy of Barack Obama, U.S Democratic presidential hopeful.
Onyiuke was arrested in Abuja today, following a petition written to the EFCC by the authorities of the SEC. She is currently under the custody of the EFCC.
Femi Babafemi, EFCC spokesperson, confirmed arrest.

20 August 2008 19:01Wahala is brewing big time in Nigeria and i can see us on the road to Kigali. What has the EFCC got to do with this? please can anyone tell me? i am sure no one was forced to be part of the fund raising which in my opinion was a waste of time and uneccesary anyway.

20 August 2008 19:24May God help us in this country. We are begging to understand better why we are having this market condition.Madam director general let us raise fund for all the public schools and the public health sector. This is not fair to this nation and this generation. We need this money here.

20 August 2008 19:39She thought she was wise in raising cash for Obama to curry favour but she forgot that Obama is not an Obasanjo that collect money from both “Oro” and “eegun”, She thought that by raising money, she will get to the lime light and Obama will give her an appointment? How fooloish she had been with her Phd? Every country cannot be Nigeria where accountability, transparency and the Law are taken for granted. All the money she realised at the launch should simply be taken, and used for societal development. She could not raise fund for constructing road to her village in the east yet she is raising Millions of Naira for an American that does not directly benefit her? She is simply doing eye service and the thing don land her for soup. Abeg it seems as if she don eat belle-full, so she should just leave her NSE job for a more serious person since she has noe become a proffessional fund raiser.

20 August 2008 19:54There were reportedly 56 buffet tables at the dinner, loaded with champagne, red wine, beer and assorted drinks, Obama’s posters decorated the stage and the entrance, with a 25-metre long rug on which was boldly written: YES WE CAN. It is probably the most expensive dinner anyone has ever eaten in that Shell Hall, at N2. 5 million for a Platinum Corporate Table and Individual: N325, 000, and for a Gold Table: N2m and N275, 000 respectively. Madam Okereke-Onyiuke does not want to be criticised, because after all it is not our money that was being spent. The event, not to talk of the idea of a fund-raising dinner for Obama, is an invitation to commentary. She should know that.
The Madam admires Barack Obama. We all do. His brilliance, his charisma and the historical significance of his emergence as a leading contender for the US Presidency - all of this is impressive. From China to Chad, there is a phenomenal obsession with Obama and his message of change. Okereke-Onyiuke had once met Obama in the United States, had had the chance of a photo-op with him and even a brief conversation.. In 2003, she organised a similar fund-raising shindig under the umbrella of Corporate Nigeria, to help the Obasanjo re-election campaign. In 2006, Okereke-Onyiuke was one of the staunch supporters of Obasanjo’s anti-democratic Third Term Agenda. She had also helped to raise funds for Transcorp of which she was one of the original promoters, although through a sleight of hand at the Stock Exchange.
Since this woman is so gifted in raising funds to help others, why is she not on record yet as raising funds to support worthy causes that may benefit the poor? When would she mobilise her rich friends to raise funds to help motherless babies homes in Nigeria? Or the army of unemployed youths on our streets? Would she and her friends some day consider organizing fund-raising dinners to support the fight against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria? Madam Onyiuke gives the impression that she loves to raise funds to support powerful men: Obasanjo in 2003 was the most powerful man in Nigeria. She had enthused at the controversial dinner on Monday, that Obama, as President of the United States will also be the president of the world: a position she created! Rich Nigerians like to support themselves or their ilk, but imagine how many Nigerian lives N100 million can transform.
The fund-raising dinner for Obama was bound to be controversial.

20 August 2008 20:09With the way the EFCC has carried out its operation in recent time, those who thought Mrs Farida Waziri, the commission’s boss, would be non performer, have been prooved wrong. I wish the commission more successful future.

20 August 2008 20:17I think we are making progress in this country. It’s high time we cheek the excesses of some people who think they are untouchable. Madam Waziri, weldone. Na woman to woman.
Come to think of it, maybe we should give the presidency of this country to a reasonable woman. They have been politely and intelligently fearless.
Even if dem release Madam Falling Stock tomorrow, a very big point has not just been made, but scored.

20 August 2008 20:28Well I knew her time was up long ago but she made it quite obvious by her unintelligent adventure (though Ndidi componuded her disgrace by boasting unrepentantly to be (”intelligent woman with a PHD”…..) with Obama name dropping. She is not different from the former brewer (remember him? - first class + NBL = ?) and other Olusegun’s apologists. YarAdua is taking so long (and to his disadvantage) to ease out Oluseguns boys and girls

20 August 2008 20:42Nigeria and Nigerians are always seeking attention or rather practically begging to be noticed in the comity of Nations. Yet the entire world look down on us with disdain.
It was humorous to me to learn that Ndi Okereke-Onyiuke was raising funds for Barack Obama, the american presidential hopeful, when millions of Nigerians go to bed daily with empty stomachs. When our Nation cannot afford the most basic neccesity of life like food, water, electricity, motorable roads. When we are still living in cities that our past Rulers disgracefully refered to as an urban jungle (whereas it was his responsiblity to turn it, into a prestigious city)while are rural areas are in darkness.
When on earth will the Nigerian goverment stop making a mess of themselves, and mind their own business.
I feel sorry for Ndi Okereke-Onyiuke, IF SHE WAS INVOLVED IN THIS RUBBISH, SO SHOULD BE DEALT WITH ACCORDINGLY

20 August 2008 20:44Nigerians,even when we are convinced that the president is not ready to fight corruption ,i am going to be a happy man if this story is true,Okereke ndi,was a frontliner of transcorporation that milked nigeria dry on the prompting of baba iyabo,i know one day ,and very much soon ,all these fugitive proffessionals will be brought to book

20 August 2008 20:49Serves her right. Her job is to serve the Nigerian people at the stock exchange and that includes sound judgement one of which is not to be partisan. They should probe how she got the job in the first instance; was she one of the numerous mistresses of the former Aso Rock occupant? Any sensible nation will wait to see the outcome of the election and her actions could jeopardise Obama’s chances except that Nigerians are not taken seriously by the West anyway; they only recognise us for oil.

20 August 2008 20:51The shameless and shapeless bloated idiot should be tried and jailed for her arrogance. It is high time some degree of sanity is instilled in our public office holders. Kudos to EFCC for this singular act

20 August 2008 21:10It is a shame that, this woman could put her self in such an awkward position. Surely, she must have read and heard about EFCC. So why all this daring behaviours? Let other money bags learn from this woman. Use your money wisely. Of course it is your money. You worked hard for it. That not withstanding, spent the money reasonably. Contributing N100m for a candidate outside Nigeria, for them to get elected is wrong pure and simply. There is a lot of abject poverty in Nigeria. Roads are bad. Electricity is not working. School teachers are not been paid. So many areas money could be spent. Why, just to eat? Please people change your attitude. Help others.

20 August 2008 23:32this is very goooood. Some people think they are above the Law and can always exploit our collective intelligence. ILLEGALLY raisng UNSOLICITED and UNLAWFUL 100million Naira for a candidate in American election in the midst of the poverty of the ordinary Nigerian only reflects the contempt with which our public officials hold us. What about the national implication if that candidate does not win. She and her cohorts must be made to account for that money

20 August 2008 23:37i was wondering when this madness would end.
while some Nigerians have just lost their ancestral homeland in the game of “poli-tricks”,
some mediocre went about raising fund for another man who is obviously not thinking about losing anything other than the presidency of a ready-made state like the US. one would have expected the headlines to chant towards finding at least a compesating alternative to those who fell victim of the bakassi elimination.
madam stock exchange and others like her should learn to respect the intelligence of Nigerians.

21 August 2008 00:34The arrest if true is damaging to Nigeria as a corporate entity through shaking of confidence in our stock exchange
That aside, unless there is a watertight evidence of economic crime committed, her involvement in Obama campaign is NOT a sufficient ground to arrest Ndi Okereke-Onyiuke.
As a sceptic when there is need to be so, there is more to it, and in fact I suspect she may have unwittingly gave weapon to enemies within gunning for her downfall.
Overall, it is bad for the country

21 August 2008 03:11This is just a pointer to the fact that it may take a while before our Women could take over mantle of leadership at the level of Politics in this country. It shows some of them are overzealous in whatever position they occupy and could be bulish. One of them was invited to testify at a panel sometime ago she was lecturing. Universities or whatever institution awarding these Profesorship should have a process of repremanding these Profesors when they goofed e.g Iwu and the lots.

21 August 2008 08:56It’s rather so unfortunate that Ndi should allow her reputation and all the high esteem with which people hold her to just fizzle out like this, over an issue that is yet not quite clear to me.it may have been true and may not be as well, but there’s a lesson there for everyone who aspires to be great someday and the lesson is this;”we should not allow little things to soil our reputation because the higher you go the more easy it becomes for a non-issue to become a scandal”
nigerians should understand that although she was arrested ,it doesn’t mean that she did something bad.It may just be one of those allegations without proof.

21 August 2008 08:58Madam Okereke is not a kind-hearted mother. Millions of Nigerians are living below poverty level which are also crying for help. She is in a position to help the helpless, instead she is extending her dirty hands to those that will not appreciate the fund.
Those that are in a position to help poor & needy will continue to receive dirty slaps from God. I had great respect for the Woman but God is never asleep.

21 August 2008 10:07NIGERIA! What a country! EFCC What a swift move! It took just a phone call and a petition to arrest the Director-General of the Nigerian stock Exchange, Ndi Okereke-Onyiuke, within a couple of days, while pronounced corrupt operations evidenced by several corruption probe panels levelled against Olusagun Obasango has not triggard the andrenalin of Mrs Waziri or her spokes’ person
Mr. Femi Babafemi to bring the Otta high chief to book. Nigerians and indeed the world is watching. In as much as I know that Dr. Mrs Onyiuke did not show enough wisdom in the N100million Fundraiser, the participants should all be arrested as accomplices in such
a brutalised Nigerian economy.

21 August 2008 10:15People, did you see her full page advert on the Guardian of today (Page 17)? It is a reply to a report by Punch on August 19, 2008 on the Africans for Obama dinner held on 11th August, 2008. Madame NSE is whining again o o. I guess she is trying to say that all other Nigerians except those who donated monies at the Obama fund raising dinner do not understand what they are all about. In case you don’t know yet, she re-affirmed that the dinner/concert of Africans for Obama 2008 is not anyway affiliated to Obama Campaign Group in USA. The dinner, she says is to “sensitize and mobilise Africans worldwide and other eligible USA citizens to REGISTER and VOTE instead of passively watching History being made”. I really liked the last paragrah, she goes “…. The Chairman clearly stated that any surplus funds after the accounts have been prepared by the Charterd accountants would be utilised for advertisement including on-line to encourage Africans that are of voting status and all other Americans to exercise their franchise. What Africans for OBama 2008 is doing is not in anyway different from any any group of individuals worldwide”. And it is signed:
Prof. Ndi Okereke Onyiuke, Ph.D, OON, Cahirman,
Africans for Obama 2008, Citizen of Nigeria & Permament
Resident of USA (Green Card)
When will this buffoonery end?!!! Why can’t she use the money that she paid for that advert to update the Nig. Stock Exchange Library at least. I have a problem when the older citizens behave like toddlers in this country!

21 August 2008 10:29If people decieves people -PDP, can do and overdo without trial and conviction, EFCC can also arrest and question Okereke today, tomorrow granted her bail by a fake and incompitent court, then allow her to fly back to USA. So congratulations to PDP, EFCC, and all other GOVT. ENTITIES, for able to fool us all the same time. Fellow commentators, are we not suppose to ask or find out how many people arrested, tried and convicted in this country ? This people that are on trial, are their travelling documents not suppose to be confiscated pending their trial ? but why are these guys , even with 160 charges count , like Ibori, Igbinedion are all travelling abroad ? let wait and see, tomorrow madam Okereke with her Green Card, will go to America, while EFCC file will rust there . ( NO WAHALA, DEM DON MAKE US FOOL ,FOR BELIEVING THEM ! 21 August 2008 11:00Ndi Okereke disgraced her family and she has faild Nigerians, i am not against her raising funds for whosoever but it just shows her lack of knowledge to understand that most people in this country go to bed without food. what has she done about it. if you give to the poor you give unto God, if you give to rich people like you , you are only cutting a deal.100m will go a long way to put smiles on the face of motherless children, theres so many peolple who can not pay for their treatment in the hospital, since she’s a professional fundraiser. she could raise fund for the subsidy of health care services, what impression is she trying to create. charity begins at home. she should clear the mess in her house first.

21 August 2008 11:24It is unfortunate that someone like Dr. Okereke who works in a high profile position in Nigeria can put herself in such a mess. I don;t know what she thinks she is doing. She should be jailed for such a position. Nigerian government and senators should stay clear of US as presidential election. Foriegn governments do not get involve in the politics of another country. All over nigeria, the governors, senators and even ministers are all openly expressing their support for US presidential candidtate. US is not Nigeria where every fraud is condoned. Our atitude can backfire since Nigeria is known to be filed with individuals who got into power by all means and also a country top of corruption. Please stay clear of Obama and don’t polute his candidacy.
Nigeria should focus on Nigeria problems where every minute a child dies due to malnutrition, malaria, or preventable childhood diseases. Unemployment is at its hihgest rate and poverty is killing the nation. Mrs Okereke should put that money in his village, create jobs for people in Mbaise and not getting her nose in a country with everything imaginable for their people.
There is a lot to be done in nigeria to promote healthy living and not people like okereke puffing like oversized puff-puff.
BIGFEST
21 August 2008 12:00What next after the arrest by EFCC?.I know. She will be granted bail with some silly conditions attached which she will surely meet.EFCC should be more serious and prosecute anyone arresyed to conclusion rather than this arrest and bail comedy.

21 August 2008 12:10Raising fund for Obama is highly unpatriotic, It is obvious that she has expired as DG of NSE.
she should be kicked out as the DG without further delay. she is a shame to her people and the Nation.
GINIKA OKONKWO
21 August 2008 12:34Madam DG is a disappointment to Nigeria going by her recent tantrums. her campaign for President Obasanjo between
3003-2007 left a sour taste in the mouth and portrayed her as one OBJs mistresses of easy fortunes. With a mountain of
Nigeria”s problems: bad roads, unemployment poor medical facilities, collapse of edcation sector, lack of power for industries,
the Niger Delta crisis, shortage of shelter, escalating cost of food and other basic needs, Professor Okereke- Onyiuke’s
psychological migration to the USA to support Barrack Obama is a domonstration that common sense is not common Ph.D or
no PhD. She should be made to quit her job, period.

21 August 2008 12:56Dr Ndi Okereke to me has done the best . Why? bcos by raising money 4 Obama will benefit NIGERIA AND AFRICA IN MANY WAYS,but all these benefit are futuristic in nature.Okereke has done very well at the stock exchange. What was our position among all other comittee of nations in term of stock exchange b4 she came in ? NIGERIANS WILL ALWAYS EASILY FORGET THE GOOD PPLE HAS DONE IN THE PAST, AND SHOUTING ABOUT THEIR BAD SIDES.Lets change our orientation 4 God sake. WHEN OBAMA WINs! 21 August 2008 13:23This clearly has proved that we nigerians dont have love for our selves rather we prefer the oyibos to our selves. how can the DG NSE that is appointed to serve the nigerian public and its econmy encourage fund raising for an American citizen. America that is the current world power. it is like saying you are helping the sea by donating water to it from your house with a bucket full of water. DG and advisers has serlfish interest to gratify.
i will not suggest the money be collected from her cos any money retrived from any body caught in a wrong act is never accounted for. the group of people that will collect the money will still invest the money outside the country to thir advantage.
DG well done, 70% of the Nigerian youths are jobless and you are at home with fund rasing that will nt profit you and the people you are serving. God will judge your consence and that of your advisers.

21 August 2008 13:36NDI OKEKE didnt need to raise any fund for Obama because he refused collecting the money given to him from his party members for campagin. he is an honest man Africans should let him be, before they make him lose and for our sister, people are suffering in Nigeria you dey give AMERICANS MONEY
Laolu Owolabi
21 August 2008 14:29My particular grouse with Madam DG is the flounting of her PH.D and green card as an answer to an obvious breach of American law on a fund raisng that was not well thought out but probably well meaning. Simply saying “oh i admit that we are wrong, we did not advert our mind to the law” and putting a hold on the fund raising would have saved her this backlash. Whether the fund is transferred directly to the Obama Campaign or used to mobilise voters or create awareness will still amount to a breach of the law. The other angle is a situation if Obama looses the election? Will madam DG expect Mccain to be favourably disposed to Nigeria or the Stock Exchange? So much for PH.D!
Dr Olusegun Fakoya
21 August 2008 14:54In as much as the excesses of this selfish and callous woman needs to be curtailed, at the same time, we need to be careful not to turn the EFCC into a monster that may turn round to become a problem to curtail. This woman’s over-inflated ego needs serious deflation, what is questionable is whether the dreaded might of the EFCC is essential.
The EFCC has its hands in virtually all spheres of our national life, dabbling into this and that and leaving many things uncompleted. we need a strong and focus anti-corruption body, not one acting like a spoiler and achieveing little results. most times, we read about EFCC arresting this or that, but how many convictions have come from such actions?
Meanwhile, i hope the money recovered from our dear Madam DG would be diverted to good causes within the country. Obama never solicited for her help. This is Nigerian money that should be spent on needy Nigerians.
Dr. Joseph Owumi
21 August 2008 15:19As a fellow learned academician, I am sorry to say with all humility that Dr. Okeke is a complete failure. She ought to know better that Nigerians will react in a very forceful way when those who are in a position of authority abuse the privilege bestowed on them. She should be fired from her position.

21 August 2008 15:54Ndi has offered an intriguing explanation. The objective, according to her, is to sensitize Nigerians (or is it Africans?) in US to vote for Obama. Is this not an active participation in US elections? If the answer is yes, can she explain to those of us who have neither lived in US for 14 years nor held Green Card if the American law that she knows very well allows non-Americans to participate in American presidential elections in any shape or form. Furthermore, it appears that the major or only reason why they should vote for him is because he is their brother. His policies are secondary. Has she considered the feelings of millions who support him for what he stands for and not for the colour of his skin? A corollary to this is what would happen if all the whites rally around McCain because of the colour of his skin? She tells us that she holds a PHD she did buy and this makes her intelligent. Unfortunately, I learnt early in life that common sense is not necessarily common. Indeed, she and her friends have every right to spend their money as they wish. Poor peole like me who do not have a minimum of N275,000 to pay for a dinner should take consolation in the saying that some people have more money than sense. It is interesting that nobody issued a cheque. Was it strictly a matter of cash? The source of such payments is often difficult to trace. For instance, we may never know if those who can spend so much for a dinner even pay income tax! Perhaps, Soludo should consider introducing a policy that will reduce the amount of cash an individual can carry as is done in many countries. Please, we should remember that as of now she has not been accused of breaking any of the existing Nigerian laws. I guess the goal of EFCC is to first determine whether an economic crime has been committed. Until an official report is issued, it is prudent to avoid rush to judgement.

21 August 2008 19:37Well my brothers and well wishers has done much ,i mean in their comment s,she as one of my brother said thinks she is in obasanjo level, where bribe is no more called bribe but gift, without insulting her any more . That money is enough for the increment of salaries to our teachers ,and doctors ,when were crying over the money robbed by the so called nigerian helpers ,and the stupidity of some of our leaders that dosent know that nigeria is their home ,this my sister has the impetus to raise funds for obama, well she did well ,maybe she is planning to pally with him .she have to face the panelity ,i am nobody to judge her but if i am ,she is liable to life imprisionment, for abusing the post confered to her by the federal republic of nigeria and so with all that did the same .

21 August 2008 20:49It is time for this woman to go and rest , this is not the first time she is doing this kind of coporate fraud on corporate Nigeria.
Nigerian govt must remove her from that office because she is causing us a disgrace in the international world and for the funds rraised at the event Fed Govt should take the proceed to the FEDERATION ACCOUNT for developmental purposes

22 August 2008 09:36This woman is an idiot and epitomises everything that is bad about Nigeria’s so called ‘leaders’. First as an ardent supporter of Obasanjo’s third term agenda, now this idiotic scheme to rip people off. Both her and the brainless nincompoops who attended the ‘fundraiser’ deserve every single bit of derision they get. I just wish it were legally possible to sieze that money and use it for electoral reforms in Nigeria.

22 August 2008 09:47I believe the time has come for the Militants to stop the kidnapping in the Niger Delta and turn to the looters of our economy. People like this overfed Madam should be bundled out and hanged. People like Anenih who have killed thousands on Benin Exp. road because they put the money meant for the roads into their pockets. Those who stole our funds meant for power projects and all those who dont mean to serve but to loot. Militants, that is where the stuggle lies!!

22 August 2008 13:38Serves her right. The question is: is Obama in need of fund? If yes, he knows how to raise it. Ndi should know that and stop making a fool of herself. EFCC shuold not let her off the hook till she cough out the money. I just hope this will serve sa a deterrant to would-be unwanted fund raisers.

29 August 2008 01:18This is not about Madam Okerere alone. How many people has EFCC arrested, found guilty and are there parading the streets and roads of Nigeria without nothing been done to them simply because they know the powers that be? May the lord have mercy on Nigeria. Before we pass judgement on others let us check ourselves as well that we are not found guilty.
Obocha
29 August 2008 15:11Professor Ndi-Onyiuke, you were not politically sensitive at all. Being on helm of affairs, more especially the DG of NSE, our interface with the world, you ought not to outrightly support a particular US Presidential candidate, but should have been neutral in the whole thing. What if McCain wins, what impression have you given to him and the world about Nigeria. Did the country send you? Please learn to do your civil service and retire ceremoniously. You should be more concerned on how to improved the collapsing sector, NSE, that you are heading.

29 August 2008 18:28In my opinion, i really think that all these definitely must have a had a history, i dont mean the history of trying to raise funds and co, i mean the root of it started from a long while ago when no one Knew Ndidi, those time of little beginnings when she had no position or authority in her coffers, the times when she was rather unknown…those are when the seeds were sown, all we see here now are just the products and harvest or better still manifestations, and honestly many others Nigerians are possibly cultivating such fraudulent and con-man tendencies even in shores far from home…i say they should be curtailed as early as possible before they not only disgrace themselves but also go ahead to embarrass us all as a nation (the most populous black/dark skinned nation in the world).
They always try to make you feel they are helping other while it will eventually turn out that they are in fact helping themselves at people’s expense, one of them is here in capetown south africa, claiming to teach fellow Nigerian about 3d animation and ripping them off a lot of money, only to get to south africa to find out they have in fact been so gullible to believe all they were told in the first place… another form of human trafficking i suppose…. it all starts like this and when unchecked by close companions it develops into such horrible topics as we discuss here now. Obama would not have solicited for foreign funds when it is clearly against the US electoral policy, to receive foreign funding under whatever guise for election purposes.
EFCC on the other hand should be a lot more intentional when it comes to their approach and they should not only start the cleansing process but also complete it, otherwise they must not even make arrests in the first place. Lets hope this episode will give EFCC a diferrent face, otherwise its the same old story as from the past.

2 September 2008 01:34i wonder what someone of that high post doing with all these petty obtaining moreover she is presently one of the most respected in uk where we live because she motivates most of us down here to invest in nigeria stocks market meanwhile what does OBAMA got to do with nigeria problem.Director-General of the Nigerian Stock Exchange, Ndi Okereke-Onyiuke is trying to pull herself down by all these and she is somehow a role model for the young people but do we never learn ? and live a plain and transparenc life.WHAT DOES OBAMA GOT TO DO WITH FUNDRAIING IN NIGERIA EVEN his mother land (kenya ) never raise a dime FOR HIM. SO WHY ME OOO.

3 September 2008 15:01I have a dream, that one day, all the anomalies in Nigeria will become things of the past.
I have a dream, that one day, all the bad and corrupt, insensitive, self centered sycophants will pass on, leaving the stage for young fresh minds with the fear of God to take over the mantle.
I have a dream, that one day, all the trillions of Naira illegaly slashed away will be genuinely recovered and judiciously used for the betterment of our nation, and the battered innocent citizens.
Oooooooooo I have a dream…….
