With effect from 31 May, 2008, smokers who indulge in the act in public places within the Federal Capital Territory risk jail terms if arrested.

The FCT Minister, Dr. Aliyu Modibbo Umar charged all residents of the capital city to desist from smoking in public places as his Administration will implement the Tobacco Smoking Control Act of 1990 to the letter.

Speaking in Abuja yesterday, the Minister stated that the Tobacco Control Act will be enforced fully in the 8,000 square kilometer of the Federal Capital Territory, warning that smoking will longer be permitted in public places  within the territory.

Dr. Umar solicited for the cooperation of all the residents of the Federal Capital Territory and visitors alike to build an enduring and all inclusive Capital City to the admiration of others.
