Fashola’s Aide Empowers 102 Widows

December 14, 2009 15:27, 74 views

At least 102 widows have been empowered to start up small scale businesses by the Special Assistant to the Governor on Religious Matters, Rev. Sam Ogedengbe.

The widows were given assorted items such as toilet rolls, toothpastes, detergent and soap, among others to start up their businesses.

At the distribution of the items to the widows in Lagos, Ogedengbe said the gesture was meant to touch lives and borne out of mercy for widows.

He said it was his desire to bring the less privileged out of the grip of hunger and poverty and fashion a better future for them.

Ogedengbe lamented that the level of poverty was very high in the country and the distribution of items to widows would be on a quarterly basis.

He urged the beneficiaries to make use of the opportunity so that they could get money to feed their children and increase their capital base.

Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA), Mrs. Joke Orelope-Adefulire, commended Ogedengbe for the gesture. She said it would help to complement the efforts of the state government.

She advised the women not to use the proceeds from the business to buy aso ebi but invest the money back into the business, while she encouraged other Nigerians to come out and help the widows to live meaningful lives.

“It is poverty that breeds hooliganism and robbery, so mothers should take care of their children so that they don’t turn into robbers,” said the WAPA boss, who was represented by the Director, Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Dupeola Adepoju.
