Following the killing of the Area Commander of Ijebu Divisional Police Command, ACP Oludokun Omolodun, at the weekend, thousands of residents of Ijebu-Ife in Ijebu East Local Government Area of Ogun State, have fled the town.
Some of them were said to have fled to neighbouring towns like Ijebu-Ode, Ijebu-Imushin, Itele, Oregun, Oke-Owa, Ikoto, Atoyo, Imobi, Ogbere, Owu, Ikija and some, according to a reliable source, have fled to Ore town in Ondo State.
When our correspondent visited the town this morning, fierce looking armed mobile policemen were seen all around the town, while an armoured tank was stationed at the Market junction.
P.M.NEWS gathered that many residents fled the town when hundreds of armed mobile policemen stormed the town to quell the riot ignited by the death of a tailor, allegedly beaten to death by the vigilance group in the town.
The late ACP Omolodun was reportedly shot by youths in the town when he led his men to quell the riot between the youths and vigilance men over the death of the tailor.
Investigations revealed that the town is deserted. Shops are closed. All public and private schools have also been closed. Church services did not hold in many of the churches yesterday due to fear of reprisal attacks.
A community leader, who pleaded anonymity, told our correspondent from his hideout that the crisis could have been averted if the police had not taken side in the matter.
“The matter would not have degenerated to this level if the police had been neutral. The police triggered the crisis and it’s unfortunate. I am going to 80 years now, I have never witnessed this kind of ugly incident. People were being killed as if we are in a warfront.
“All that we laboured for in our lives were destroyed while we watched without being able to do anything. Parents have been separated from their children, husbands from wives. This is too much.
“I am appealing to the state government to intervene before it gets out of hand. The government should ensure that those connected with the mayhem are brought to book,” he stated.
Crisis erupted in Ijebu-Ife at the weekend when some youths took to the streets to avenge the killing of Mr. Tokunbo, a tailor, by the vigilance group in the town.
According to some of the youths who spoke with our correspondent at their hideouts: “Tokunbo was in his shop doing his business. He had many clothes to sew and opted to work overnight. The vigilance group told him to close his shop and come back the following day. He refused and they beat him with juju. He died later around midnight.
“When we heard about his death, we were seriously touched. We decided to protest the killing so as to put a stop to all kinds of unjust killings in the town.
“During the protest, we were attacked by the vigilance group. We engaged them in a fight and they invited the policemen. Before we could say anything, the police started shooting at us.”
On how the Area Commmander lost his life, one of the youths said: “Nobody knew that he was the area commander. They were shooting at us and we replied them. We were at the warfront and whoever we laid our hands on, we gave justice. We also lost many of our colleagues. I don’t know why they are all shouting about the death of the area commander. We also lost many youths during the violence.”
When our correspondent visited Igbeba Police Station in Ijebu-Ode, a police source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the death of the ACP, but denied the allegations that the police took side in the crisis.
“It is true that oga is dead, but it was unfortunate. The boys were saying we took side in the crisis. Why should we do that? We came to intervene to ensure that peace and order reigned. The next thing they did was to kill and butcher the ACP like a cow. It’s very bad.
“The man has come, saw but not conquered. He made sure there was reformation within the police in his domain and he was doing that before he met his death.
“Though he had no premonition that he would die that fateful day, he was fond of telling us to be ready to die as heroes than to quit as a coward.
“He died a hero and we shall always remember him. The Police will miss his him,” he stated.
All efforts to get the Chairman of the vigilance group, Chief Duduyemi Jewo, Olufe of Ijebu-Ife, to comment on the violence, proved abortive. Also, the Chairman of the local government, Comrade Tunde Oladunjoye, could not be reached, as his phone was off.
In a text message sent to our correspondent this morning, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed that some people were arrested, but could not give the specific figure.
He assured that normalcy has returned to the town and that those arrested will assist the police in their investigation.
The late Mr. Oladokun Omolodun, who was an Assistant Commissioner of Police, (ACP) was born in Surulere, Lagos State, in 1964.
He graduated from the University of Lagos, Akoka in 1986 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A) degree in Geography, and proceeded to the Nigeria Police Academy, Kano in 1988 after his Youth Service.
Omolodun was among the first set of Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in the Academy from where he graduated in 1989.
He first served in Lagos from 1989 to 1997, before he was posted out of Lagos, following a directive from the Force Headquarters that Lagosians in the Force should no longer serve in Lagos.
The late Omolodun was transferred from Sokoto State to Ogun State as Area Commander, Ijebu-Ode, in July 2008. A position he held until his death.

Our leaders should sit down together now to rescue Nigeria out of these dangerous weapons. That is all we are saying “give us a state and community police”

7 December 2009 16:22All these people were armed by the PDP led government of Ogun State. This can be substantiated with the killer squad being maintained by OGD. Who will forget in a hurry when he was commanding his warriors? Has police investigated this till date, since it was aired on AIT in 2007. The youth that OGD was commanding are all from Ijebu and Abeokuta areas of Ogun State. Where are the weapons they brandished right in from of OGD?

7 December 2009 22:10This reader is short of words because this is his “neck of the woods.” Ife is bucolic, laid back, unassuming, pastoral, etc. The events reported here portend a nation whose fabric is tearing from the inside. Matters at issue here relate to no high office but simple community safety. Ijebu-Ife used not to need a vigilante group. Vigilance against who? Against a tailor with a lot of work to do? When did it become illegal for a tailor to work at night? Why should an open shop that can be watched and patrolled by the so-called vigilantes become a security threat? Is the tailor a suspected criminal? If he is, how come he is not reported to the police? That law broke down a long time ago, we all know. Not clear to me before now is that order too has gone to sleep. Ijebu-Ife of all places!!! That was a very peaceful town. My commiseration to the victims, including the family of the murdered police chieftain.

7 December 2009 23:32Your report is so unfair to Late ACP Omoloduun,Late Omolodun was unjustly killed by the senseless ijebu-ife indigine.Omolodun was a fine officer who can not hurt a fly,as a matter of fact you will not believe he is a police officer because he always resolve conflict through mediation
On the issue that led to his barbaric murder he had a distress call on Friday night at about 11.00pm and by his nature he proceeded on to Ijebu-ife with just five policemen in one of the patrol van and at about 2.30am the following morning he succeded in calming frayed nerve and restore peace and he left Ijebu -ife for his base in ijebu-ode to receive another distress call at about 7.00am that the youths are mobilising to burn the palace of the traditional ruler of the town and because of he was man of peace,he did mobilise his men to be on stand by and proceeded to Ijebu-ife to appeal to them to let peace reign supreme and they should abide by the earlier reached agreement, but unknown to him the rioters has there own plan, immedieately he came down from the patrol van to address them they attacked him ,pull him down and slaughter him like a ram in other to finish up this heinous crime they now put tyre on his neck and set him ablaze.
For your information the late officer was in sport wear ready to go and play a game of lawn-tennis that morning before the distress call,it is also on record that none of the police men that accompany him on the unfateful mission are not armed because he felt that it was a build up to the peace he had earlier achieved,it is a common knowledge if they are armed they would move close to him not to talk of pinning him down to slaughter
On the final note which all rise up and condemn in absolute totality the crime committed the animals in ijebu-ife,what they did in Odi ,Bayelsa is a child play to what they did in ijebu ife and we all know what becomes of odi and seriously speaking the same type of treatment should be visited on them because what is good for goose is good for gander

7 December 2009 23:34Good day. I will like to commend you for the truth of your report. But there are some fact that were missing and I will like to push that in. 11 of the people being paraded as suspects were arrested, malhandled, beaten and one killed (Camera man) at the venue of the family house where cooking was being done for the final Burial ceremony of Mrs. Mosidat Agbeke Okeowo. When the police were told that they were killing innocent people they replied that the man ( Area Commandant) killed is innocent so they will raze the town down and there will not be a man in the village. This is insane, injustice and un called for. I gathered that the Mopol went raping all the remaining women in the village after killing their husband. Why must we continue to shed innocent blood in a land that need transformation and God’s intervention. Right now, the innocent family, firends and well wisher arrested at the venue of party have been transferred to Igbeba then Elewe Eran and now Abuja for crime they know nothing about. Please use your good office and medium to expose the ill of the police to innocent citizen. The Assistant Commisioner of Police was the one that led the Mopol to the venue of the party to arrest the family and friends who were even planning to relocate the venue of the party to a nearby town since all the food and driends were ready and guest are on the way. I pray that the people will come out alive and God will vindicate them in jesus name. Shalom.

8 December 2009 02:00May the soul of ACP Omolokun rest in peace. I met him recently at Igbeba Police Station, Ijebu Ode as a lawyer to secure the bail of a suspect detained at the Obalende Police Station, Ijebu-Ode. He was civil, courteous and obviously well lettered. Very much unlike the arrogant officers I met at the Obalende police station. Extra Judicial Killings: How Police Routinely Waste Lives
December 03, 2009 17:39, 94 views
By Astro Jewoola
Early in the 1980s when a policeman shot dead Dele Udoh, an athlete, many thought it was an aberration. But the death of the Dawodu brothers in the hands of a trigger happy police corporal, which sparked off a series of riots on Lagos Island in 1987, was no happenstance. It was no coincidence either. It was definitely premeditated murder.
In recent times, death of innocent citizens in the hands of the very people employed to protect them has become alarming. Very few of these killer cops have been brought to book. These days Nigerian policemen routinely kill innocent citizens, usually over trivial issues. The trend is disturbing, disheartening and something needs to be done to stem this drift into lawlessness.
It is becoming an acceptable norm that policemen may kill suspects, usually under vague excuses of torture whole obtaining statements or through the usual accidental discharge.
The list of extra-judicial killings is endless and the Nigeria Police Force is now looked upon as harbingers of sorrow.
Police often kill suspects and tag them as ‘armed robbers’ just to cover up their crime. They fear nobody, not even the courts of law.
On Monday 28 July, 2008, the Nigerian Tribune reported the killing of a commuter bus driver who failed to pay policemen at a check-point the required N20 settlement. The driver, the paper stated, fell down while trying to flee, but the police chased, caught him, and hit his chin on the ground. He sustained a head injury that later led to his.
In February 2001, Corporal Rabiu Bello, attached to the Kaduna State Criminal Investigations Department (CID) demanded that a young apprentice, identified as Halisu Salau Agaba, bring him a stick of cigarette. It was alleged that Bello shot Agaba because the latter could not afford to buy the stick of cigarette (TheNews magazine 30-04-2001).
Most of the time, overzealous policemen behave as if there are no laws that guide their conduct. In 2003, when Mr. Tafa Balogun was the Inspector General of Police, a group, Concerned Youth Alliance (CYA) held a peaceful protest in Abuja, a day before the arrival of President George Bush to Nigeria. The protest was to express their disappointment over the widespread fraud that accompanied the 2003 elections, and to highlight various civil rights violations by the Nigeria Police Force.
At about 8.30 a.m on that day, eleven heavily armed policemen, led by Assistant Commissioner of Police, arrested the coordinator of the group and dragged him to the police headquarters where he was taken to then IGP, Balogun. He was consequently detained at Zone 3, Abuja, for 15 days.
Crime Watch investigations revealed that Nigerian policemen routinely resort to disproportionate and illegal use of lethal force during the course of their duties, while some of them have been adequately trained in the use of firearms, the basic capacity to cope with the so many challenges and poorly remunerated.
The new Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Ogbonnaya Onovo on 18 September reportedly expressed concern over the attitude of some of his men to human lives.
Two bad incidents led to this. Miss Amanda Ukunwagho 32, was reportedly killed in police custody in Benin City. The second one, Kenneth Umuna, 32 became deaf and dumb and could no longer walk after honouring an invitation by Gabasawa Police Station, Kaduna State, following a quarrel between him and his neighbour.
Still in Benin City, along the Mission Road, a commercial motorcyclist was killed after he traded words with a policeman attached to the Mission Road branch of a new generation bank.
Even the former Inspector General of Police, Mike Okiro, openly admitted that about 785 suspected “armed robbers” were shot and killed between June and the beginning of September 2007, while exchanging gun fire with policemen. He disclosed this to the House of Representatives Police Affairs Committee while highlighting his ‘achievements’ within the first three months in office.
On 30 September, 2008 at about 2.30 am, Bayo Awosika, a promising banker, was shot by some callous policemen while driving home in his Kia Optima car with registration number GG 529 AAA. He was murdered at the Lekki roundabout, Lagos and the body was found the following day.
When his elder brother, Biodun Awosika, got to the scene, he wept uncontrollably upon sighting the lifeless body of his sibling. But, upon closer examination of the body, he disagreed that his brother was involved in an accident as claimed by the police. While there were neither business nor scratches on the body of the deceased, his skull had been perforated by bullets.
Bayo became another statistic in the thousands of extra-judicial killings by the men in black. Sadly only few of these killer cops have been brought to book. The police hierarchy promises to investigate the incidents and most of the time, it comes to naught.
On 1 September, 2009, the family of Yusuff Omole Oladipo was thrown into mourning. A policeman identified as Sergeant Olowojoyin Abolade, attached to Iponri Divisional Police Station, shot and killed Yussuff, who had quarrelled with him.
The trigger-happy police Sergeant reportedly shot his victim at about 10.30 p.m at Ademuyiwa junction, Apapa Road, Ebute-Metta, Lagos. It was alleged that the cop killed Yusuff in order to please his lover, identified as Madam Theresa, who sells cooked food and resides in the area.
Eyewitnesses said the food seller had on Wednesday told her policeman lover that she and Yusuff had a quarrel.
The killer cop, it was learnt, was not on duty on the day of the incident but he was reported to have searched all nooks and crannies of Apapa road, looking for the deceased.
When Sergeant Olowojoyin found him in company of his friends, he made an effort to arrest him but Yusuff resisted and Olowojoyin reportedly shot him in the neck. When the killer realised he had murdered Yusuff, he shot into the air sporadically to prevent being mobbed, and made good his escape.
On Saturday, 26 September, a 30-year old man, Dele Sodipo, was shot dead by a policeman identified as Monday. The killer cop was attached to Iju Divisional Police Station (Red House) Iju-Ishaga.
Dele was shot in the leg and died in the hospital from loss of blood occasioned by the gunshot injury.
According to sympathisers, Rose, the lady who allegedly caused the problem, was dating Sodipo and when they broke up she started dating Monday. Both men were said to be regular patrons of Rose’ hot drink (paraga) joint.
Trouble started when Rose reported Dele to Monday, complaining of an alleged assault. Monday reportedly mobilized other policemen, including Cletus his friend, to arrest Dele. He was shot during the struggle that ensued.
Speaking on the issue, Police Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba told Crime Watch that the killing of Nigerians by policemen is rather unfortunate. “Basically, the position of the police is simple. The police have standard rules before engaging an unarmed person in combat.
“All these rules are properly spelt out in the Nigerian Police Force Order Cap 224. If you have been following the trend, if a policeman uses his arms in a manner that is not consistent with these rules such a policeman is usually subjected to thorough investigation and if found guilty will be dismissed and charged to a court of law. We have done this in the past,” Mba explained.
“For instance, in the cases of the policemen from Iponri and Iju-Ishaga divisions, the two policemen have been arrested and transferred to the SCID, Panti, Yaba for necessary action.
“We will not tolerate any kind of senseless killing. Police are fundamentally charged with the responsibility of protecting human lives and properties. It will amount to contradiction for any policeman charged with these responsibilities to act contrary to it.
“That explains why once there is a reported case of killing by any policeman, we will take it up very seriously.
“The job of policing is serious business. People will provoke, attack, mob, and even disarm you. But we have started the process of training and re-training some of our officers so as to enable them to cope psychologically. Finally, note that our mission statement is zero tolerance for crime,” said the PPRO.

8 December 2009 07:14its so sad what has happened in Ijebu town. I dont have all the details of all that transpired but i can confirm to you that the vigilate groups of late have been over zealous…many years ago, when they started this group as a result of high crime rate in Ijebu metropolis, they were given the mandate to deal with anyone who is found loiterring arround from 11pm without recousre to what the circumstance is…a highly placed traditional ruler gave that order. What is happening today is the result of that. good morning

8 December 2009 16:10why should the vigilance men killed the innocent tailor in the first place, to my own oppinon i suggest all the need to do is to get all the vigilance men arrested and let the go and face the law, becouse all this criss came from thier own side.
It maybe they needed to killed the innocent man inother for them to robb his shop.

8 December 2009 17:03It is a sad day when Nigerians cannot trust in the police to do the right thing. The right thing obviously would be to conduct a robust investigation into how this happened and do all they can to catch his killer (as they should if it were any other Nigerian). But my people are running away in fear of an anticipated revenge attack on the community by the Police force. This is sad beyond belief. I suppose Jungle Justice is alive and well in Nigeria, then.
