Day 2 In Jeddah: Anxiety Over Yar’Adua’s Health
November 26, 2009 13:37, 1,617 views
By Jide Osokoya
Anxiety has gripped Nigerians on the fate of President Umar Yar’Adua, following reports that he has been hospitalised at King Fahd Specialist Hospital, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
President Yar’Adua who was flown to Saudi Arabia on Monday, was yesterday admitted at the hospital. He was reported to have undergone several medical tests.
The internet and the phones were again abuzz this morning over rumours about the President’s state of health. The frenzy was reminiscent of the reactions that trailed the President’s previous trips out of Nigeria for medical attention. Feelers from Aso Rock this morning also revealed that the news of the president’s admission was creating equal anxiety, but the President’s spokesman, Mr. Segun Adeniyi was quick to douse the rumours going round. In a SMS to P.M. News today, Adeniyi said: ‘’The President is OK’’. Adeniyi said he was at a loss as to why Nigerians kept peddling rumours about President Yar’Adua, adding that the President’s return will squelch such rumours.
The 58-year-old president who was received at the King Abdulaziz International Airport, Jeddah by the Saudi Director-General of Royal Protocol has been battling with ill-health even before he assumed office in May 2007.
Yar’Adua, who is believed to be suffering from kidney problems, had traveled out twice for medical check up before he was sworn-in as president and in August last year, he spent two weeks in a Saudi hospital with his wife, Turai, by his bed side.
The president whose health problem has become a serious concern for Nigerians at home and abroad, has also been to Germany for medical treatment.
King Fahd Hospital, where the President is receiving medical help was established in 1983. It has one of the most sophisticated health care facilities and experts in the world.

26 November 2009 14:06My candid advice for our president-RESIGN and have enough time for your health and family. When Gani Fawehinmi was sick,he made it known to the public and resigned peacefully but he eventually gave up the ghost.Death is inevitable,it is expected end of every living things on earth.
In 1998 when Abacha was there despite the fact that he was terribly sick, his advicers kept on telling him to continue cos of what they were benefitting from him, when he died they were the first set of pple to disown himeven up till date.

26 November 2009 16:29YAR ADUA MUST HAVE 2ND TERM WHETHER ANYBODY LIKES IT OR NOT. IF EVIL MAN OBASANJO WAS ALLOWED TO RULE 2 TERMS WHY NOT A NORTHERNER. NOBODY SHOULD TOY WITH OUR PRESIDENTIAL SLOT. EVEN IF YAR ADUA IS NOT STRONG, WE WONT MIND THE WIFE HELPING HIM TO COMPLETE IT. JONATHAN AND HIS CO-TRAVELERS SHOULD BURY THEIR AMBITION OF EARLY SUCCESSION AND WAIT FOR THEIR TIME. AFTERALLL, AFTER YAR ADUA, ITS THE TURN OF MIDDLE BELT FOLLOWED BY IBOS AND NIGER-DELTA.

26 November 2009 17:49I wish the president ’soonest recover’ however, it’s a shame that our president and other well to do individuals in Nigeria will be gonig abroad for medical check and treatment of what is sometimes bself inflicted illnesses; whilst the majority of Nigerians who are experiencing such illnes or nothing as drastic a that are dying due to lack of basic medical facilities. its a huge embarrasment that the President had to go to another country for medical facilities. I am 100% certain that the king of saudi arabia and other EU countries don’t travel to another counrty for medical facilities; rather they BUILD,MANAGE,MAINTAIN AND USE their in house medical facilities. God save Nigeria and it’s future generation. That i why some Nigerian’ s abroad do not want to come home. What sort of PR is the government giving out. Any way sha, as a fellow human being and a Nigerian, I wish him the soonest recovery and hope people coming after him will learn.
Mr. Best
26 November 2009 17:52My president, how are you today?
Hope you are getting well?
If so many thanks to God Almighty!
Despite the fearful-rumor all over your country concerning your health today, your spokesman, Mr. Segun Adeniyi who we believed that heard from you came with a subsiding good news of your present health condition that you are sound and healthy , good people of Nigerians believed him because our God is not at rest.
Nothing will happen to you, i am wishing you quick recovery.

26 November 2009 18:11When one looks at the picture of Nigeria President, one does not need Adeboye or Kumuyi or Abiara or any soothsayer to tell us that Umoru is walking corpse and just a matter of time. This is the token gift OBJ bestowed on Nigeria masses.
I am very sorry to say that majority of Nigerians DEMENSIA thats why they easily forget not long ago events and history. In 1979, OBJ bestowed Alhaji Shagari on Nigeria. Here was a man who wanted to become a Senator but but because Awo said he would proble the misrulership of the military if elected. then the satanic OBJ saw Presidency in him. The rest is now history. Here was a dying Umoru, who thought it was high time he rested to face his health problem, but because AIT? Gbenga Aruleba and some spirited and patriotic Nigerians foiled his third term bid, he along with roguish Ibori single handedly hand-picked fragile Umoru to come and die in power.
Its a pity. A nation deserves the type of rulers they have.

26 November 2009 19:37wish him speedy recovery but they should build & equip our hospitals to such international standard. its a shame that our president & other political office holders have to always travel out of the country for medical chekup and treatment. does it mean they dont have confidence in our hospitals and doctors. what then do they want the ordinary man on the street to do?

26 November 2009 22:04The Saudis re a wise lot who usetheir oil wealth to build the so called sophisticated ospital. The big question is whether Nigeria is a poor nation that cannot afford to build oneof such hospitals here for the good of all, especially the masses who cannot get on the plane to either germany or Saudi arabia. For God’s sake, enough ofhis national embarrassment. How many Arab presdents or European leaders go to other countris to spend their ard earned foreign exchange on edicl bills? Until foreign medical treatment for public officials is outlawed, Nigerian health institutions will remain in the present state of criminal neglect. This need fo foreign treament is also a contributory factor to the endemic corruption in Nigeria as public officials would want to stash public funds in foreign banks to meet contingent medical bills, The dearth of medical facilities in Nigerian hospitals will persist so long as foreign medical trips remain in vogue.

26 November 2009 22:28Interesting yet frustrating and annoying how our leaders go overseas to ridicule themselves. We cannot spend money in our own health care system. God bless Naija, may the President get well soon.

CAN HE MAKE IT UNDER ONE HOUR TO FLY TO SAUDI ARABIA? LET HIM DIE STUPID PEOPLE THAT DOESNT CARE ABOUT THEIR CITIZEN.

27 November 2009 17:45who a hell is dis danladi rabiu dat can’t just reason beyond medieval stereotypes?
who is talking of second term when the first term could not be accounted for in terms of ‘ democracy dividends?
could u (rabiu) list the achievements of this yar’adua administration?
where is the emergency promised in the power sector by the president in his inauguration speech?
what of electoral reforms and the doctoring of justice uwais-populist recommendations?
so many a failure to count against this administration.
however, one would only wish the president a quick recovery cos it’s sinful to even wish your fiercest enemy death.

27 November 2009 22:20A sick president is a sick nation,Yar adua should please resign and take a proper care of himself.it is obvious he’s sick and therefore not equal to the task of running the affairs of Nigeria.we need more agile and vibrant president.he doesnt have to die on the presidency.African leaders were found of sit tight sydrome,i hope he will listen to himself and quit before it is too late for him.

28 November 2009 13:18My Points:
HOW MANY EUROPEAN UNION MEMBERS COMES INTO NIGERIA FOR MEDICAL ATTENTION?
AND I HEARD NORTHERNERS WANT HIM TO COME DO 2ND TERM ASSIGNMENT, ALL OF THEM WILL DIE IN JESUS NAME!
We Nigerians need to stop the habit of PRAYING for a useless-slow decision maker! Is he spending his own person monies on all these Oversea travellings, or which funds is he spending off lavishly on the ill-health of his personal self? Idiot!
How long shall we continue to have these kind of “Ghost leaders in Rule?” Without having a Straight look at the way the future of this Nation will be?
Do we know that all these monies being spent away just like that is coming from Public Taxes and Collections from our sweat, that someone or a group of Bastard is feeding on crazily without rethink?
Let this Man, Yar’ Adua die!!! He cannot fix the problem of this nation- Nigeria, he is very poor in performance and economic profile.
I don’t think One must be a former school lecturer before we put things in order in this National-Madocrazy!
ALL THOSE WHO HAVE COME IN ORDER TO WASTE OUR RESOURCES ON MINOR STUFFS WHICH ARE IRRELEVANT WILL SURELY DIE B4 THE END OF THIS YEAR, IN JESUS NAME. (AMEN)!

28 November 2009 14:50The first thing that should come to mind of individual about President Yar’adua is prayer for quick recovery.Illness and dealt are not the same and only Allah, the creator who can certify . Nigerians should learn to be patient.

28 November 2009 16:15DANLADI RABIU you are very stupid man from northern, well i don blame you because nor matter anything ABOKI IS ABOKI SO KEEP THINKING LIKE ABOKI. 29 November 2009 01:32Another of Obasanjo’s devilish planning. He knew all along Yar’Adua will not be able to finish his first term and that the man is a lazy do nothing goof, this is why he made him a puppet.
The master stroke however, is in making Jonathan, a thief and traitor of his people the puppet in waiting!
Yar’Adua is either dead or will die before the year is over, and jonathan will get his chance to sit on Obasanjo’s lap and mimick his thoughts.
Cheer up fellas. The gimmick is to get a South South president in through the back door and Obasanjo retains the control and looting of oil money!
The Nigerian devil has won this battle, but the war will yet be won by the people through GOD.

30 November 2009 07:27It is not fair the way Nigerians are reacting to Mr presidents health. Politicians are the worst things that have ever happened to Nigeria. These are men feeding from the president and now they the ones praying for him to die because of his seat. Let me assure them that Mr president will not die he will leave. Everybody can fall sick. 30 November 2009 13:44People can pray from now till kingdom come Yaradua cannot be healed of that terminal disease and I as I heard, he still smokes cigarettes. Besides in the long term he cannot discharge his duties as a head of state of Nigeria with this kind of severe disability. May be if he is disabled, and confined to a wheelchair he might be able to do his job as prescribed. But with this type of life threatning disease even the most optimistic amongst Nigerians knows that the man will die sooner or later, it is a question of time. The best thing for him and his wife is to please step aside. I heard that some people are scheming for Turai to takeover in the event Yaradua succumbs to his illness. We did not elect Turai and the constitution made provision for a Vice-President and the current VP is alive and irrespective of where he comes from, if Yaradua cannot function Goodluck is the person voted for not Turai Yaradua! So any Yaradua kinsmans on this board should be told the home truth that they cannot wish Turai into Aso Rock, no matter what the schemers are planning. Nigeria is not the property of any section of the country. In any case let’s wait and see if it can happen if Yaradua die or he steps aside. Although I know that in Nigeria of these days strange things have known to happen but this can’t.

30 November 2009 14:08YES WE HAVE HEARD IT ALL ,CORNCERING OUR PRESIDENT BUT GOD GIVE LIFE AND HE CAN TAKE IT LIKE WISE,I AM ASKING GOD TO SHOW HIM MERCY.BUT MY QUESTION IS THE NORTHERNS ARE THEY PRAYING FOR THEIR BROTHER TO DIE OR WHAT WHY ARE THEY WORRYING THE VP IS THE VP THE CAUSE OF MUSA SICKNESS I WONDER FOR THEM.THE LAW ARE THERE TO FOLLOW WHY ARE WE TROUBLING OURSELVES SOMETIME I ASK MYSELF THIS QUESTION IF THIS IS CONSTITUTION GOVERNING OUR PEOPLE OR IS IT WHEN ISSUE COME UP ANYTHING CAN HAPPENS. THE CONSTITUTION SAYS THAT IF THE PRESENDIT DIES OR IS HIS IS NOT CAPABLE IS RUNING THE AFFARIS OF THE NATION THE VP AUTOMATICALLY BECOME THE PRESIDENT OK, THIS IS A VERY BAD TIME FOR NIGERIANS LET THEM BE CAREFULL OK.LIFE IS A JOURNEY MUSA HAVE TRIED OK GOD KNOWS THE BEST.

1 December 2009 00:19There is something scary and weird about this Goodluck of a vice president. Has anyone noticed how any one he assists some how gets taking out of the picture for him to step in? 1 December 2009 08:07Dear Danladi Rabiu,
I am shocked at the comment you made on-line. Even if you have that in mind, you should even let God’s will be done.
It is God that enthrones and also dethrones. You also may not be better than God in determining Obasanjo as evil. Go back to the history of Nigerian Leaders in the past and see those that have contributed to the development of their people and Nigeria in terms of Education, Health, Agriculture, International Relations and Security. I believe you will retract that comment.
Rather than inciting the North against the South or the other way round, Pray for the President and do not dream of his Wife coming to rule. We are not in India, Pakistan or Libya. We have even left Egypt.
Thy will be done O God.
God bless Mr. President and his family.
God bless Nigeria

1 December 2009 10:13Nobody will ever wish the other person death. But Mr President must be wise to himself. He has to make the call himself either to live and enjoy the rest of his life with his family or die an embarrasing death. He also need to seek forgiveness from God for dealling with the innocent like Ribadu and el-Rufai. The comon ppl that has died of disaster, hunger and illness due to poor governance.
Keeping the devild hope and alive like of Ibori, Anddokka et al
No amount of prayer can heal him unless he settled with God and asked for forgivemess. He should remember Gani is with the Lord and incase God has asked Gani what he wants Him to do for Naija his Gani Salah present. We cant debate this and all this bad people that surrounded him will take there turn. This is the bitter truth but I am inside God so dont try to attack cos urs will be faster
