Court Orders Arrest Of Lawyer

A Lagos high court sitting in Ikeja has ordered the immediate arrest of a Lagos-based lawyer, Kingsley Ughe, for failing to appear before it for the continuation of his criminal trial.

When the case was mentioned in court yesterday, he was not in court neither was he represented by any counsel. Consequently, the prosecuting EFCC counsel, Mr. G. Latona, urged the court not to treat the matter lightly because the accused had consistently refused to come to court.

Mr. Latona argued that as a lawyer, Ughe should know better than absent himself from court. He asked the court to issue a bench warrant against him.

In her ruling, Justice Morenikeji Obadina ordered that Ughe be arrested and kept in prison custody until the next adjourned day.

Ughe was arraigned before the court sometime in 2006 on a four-count criminal charge of forgery and possession of fake documents, including a payment notification advice dated October 19, 2005 purported to have been issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria.

In the four-count criminal charge number ID/148C/2006, the EFCC alleged that Ughe on October 19, 2005 at 25, Isiba Oluwo Street, Egbeda, Lagos, with intention to defraud, forged a document, power of attorney, dated 2 September, 2005 purported to have been witnessed by the Chief Judge of the Togolese High Court, one Hons. D Ngovi of Singida, Tanzamai to Barrister Jones Daniel Amore of Lome, Togo.

The offences are contrary to and punishable under Sections 6, 8 (b) and 1 (3) of  the Advance Free Fraud and Other- Related Offences Act 13 of 1995, as amended.
