Officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have foiled an attempt by a drug trafficking cartel to unlawfully export 78 kilogrammes of substances suspected to be amphetamine to South Africa. The drug was concealed in CDs packed in six bags.
The group was apprehended at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos.
One of the suspects, Ehirim Prince Ifeanyi, 43, was apprehended by NDLEA officials at the baggage checking desk during screening of passengers on Kenyan Airways.

The white powdery substance was carefully packed inside video compact discs in six bags with two other bags containing only discs as a cover-up.
P.M.News learnt that amphetamine-type stimulants (ATS) are a group of substances that contain synthetic stimulants including amphetamine, methamphetamine, methcathinone and ecstasy-group substances.
They stimulate the central nervous system. Symptoms of amphetamine abuse include euphoria, rapid pulse, restlessness and increased alertness.
According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) ATS manufacture has been reported in more than 60 countries worldwide since 1990 with more being added yearly.
In 2007, official estimate of amphetamines manufactured clandestinely were between 230 and 640 metric tonnes.
Reacting to the arrest, the NDLEA Chairman, Ahmadu Giade, said that the agency is prepared to clean up the country of any trace of illicit drugs.
“The consequences of illicit drugs, be it cocaine, heroin, cannabis and amphetamine type stimulants are real. They are unlawful, harmful and bad. We shall therefore work within the ambit of the law in bringing culprits to book. Our responsibility is to stop them and make our society drug and crime free” the NDLEA boss stated.
He also promised to arrest anyone involved in the illicit drug transaction and prosecute them accordingly.
Ehirim who claims to be dealing in electrical scraps is helping officers in investigation.
In his statement, he said that he was contracted to check-in the bags by a friend.
“I was given 25,000 naira to pay for excess luggage. They said that the bags contain home video discs. I was not the person travelling,” he stated.
The suspect is a father of six children residing at Agahausa, Okokomaiko area of Lagos.

Ehirim hails from Isu Local Government Area of Imo State.
The NDLEA has recovered two tickets from the airline with which the bags were to be checked-in. Both tickets were issued with the names, Ananwune Uchenna Charles and Ofem Sunny John.
Meanwhile, Kano State has top the list of slates where suspected durg traffickers were nabbed in the country last year.
Out of a total figure of 7, 899 suspected drug traffickers arrested last year by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) across Nigeria, 1, 145 (about 15 percent) were apprehended in Kano State alone, making it the highest state on drug traffickers’ list for 2008.
In its yearly report released yesterday in Lagos, the anti-narcotics agency disclosed that while 7, 584 (about 96 percent) suspects were males, 315 (about 4 percent) were females with a total of 336, 442.84 kilogrammes of illicit drugs seized from them.
A careful study of the table shows that even though only 208 drug offenders were arrested in Edo State, 90, 038.01 kilogrammes (about 26 percent) of the illicit drugs were seized there, making it the state with the highest quantity of drugs intercepted last year.
This is followed closely by Oyo and Ondo States with 81, 471.203 and 32, 867.4 kilogrammes of drug seizures respectively. While 266 drug offenders were arrested in Oyo State, 240 were apprehended in Ondo State. In all, these three states alone, Edo, Oyo and Ondo, accounted for over 60 percent of the drugs seized last year in Nigeria.
Seizures of cannabis accounted for 335, 535.34 kilogrammes, while cocaine and heroin stood at 365.4904 kilogrammes and 11.6054 kilogrammes, respectively.
This is as against the 2007 performance during which the agency arrested a total of 6,308 suspected drug offenders and seized 211,476 kilogrammes of drugs. The suspects were made up of 5,891 and 417 males and females respectively.
A breakdown of the drugs seized in 2007 shows that cannabis as usual accounted for the largest quantity with 210,262.90 kilogrammes. Psychotropic substances mostly tranquilizers followed with 699.735 kilogrammes.
The quantity of cocaine and heroin seized during this period under review stood at 93.678 and 120.687 kilogrammes respectively.
The statistics of drug suspects arrested in 2008 shows that there is an increase of 1,591, representing 20.14 percent increase over that of 2007.
In President Yar’Adua’s home state, Katsina, 481 suspects were picked up last year with 2, 232.757 kilogrammes of the illicit drugs while 144 suspects were arrested in Bauchi, the home state of Ahamdu Giade, Chairman of the agency. In Kogi State where Otunba Lanre Ipinmisho, NDLEA Director General comes from, 151 drug traffickers were apprehended with 5, 062.98 kilogrammes of the illicit drugs.
The bulk of cocaine and heroin seizures were made at the international airports in Lagos, Abuja and Kano.
The highest quantity of cocaine and heroin, however, came from eastern states with the most prominent being Anambra and Abbia States.

10 July 2009 16:31When you are faced with two evils, you choose a lesser one. That is the law of inverse square. In the case of Nigeria, the country is faced with multiple evil,Arm robbery,Ritual Killing,Kidnapping for rasome which is now known as rebranded armed robbery,Homosexualism,Lesbianism, voodo, witchcraftery, stealing by the government, cultism, drug trafficking, human trafficking,419 in every area of the national life even among the religious. In the 60’s and 70’s,there were little or no incedence of most of the above except the case of Arm robbery, but even then, arm robbers will take to their heels once the owner of the house confronts them with a mere “Who is that?”. After the nothern generals killed the few decent men we had in the country to gain easy access at plundering the country’s wealth which of course they succeeded in doing, things has never been the same again.Check the crime rate in the country, there is little or no arm robbery cases in the North, except thoes from the neigbhouring countries of Niger, that come in to rob.The Hausas are only engaged in ritual klling and sodomy out of the above mentioned crimes because they are very occultic. The ibos took to drug and 419 and a few cases of otokoto and okija which of course is among the people in government,The Benins took to Armed robbery 419 and drug, the yourbas took to arm robbery, ritual killing and drug,Niger delta too to kidnapping to press their grievances on the exploitation of their enviroment.Listen to the TRUTH.If the oil in the Niger delta is in the North, the North would have seperated from the rest of us.The North has the weapon of mass destruction which they use against the southerns. All the amoury are concentrated in the North and the few Southerners we have are stooges and boot lickers. If the North is sincere, the country would have been very great by now because they have ruled the country from independence till date. But they can never be.A leopard does not change its spot. Please, let the poor guy go.You can see that he has a bad eye and many mouth to feed.Would you prefer him to take up arms to rob and kill people?.

10 July 2009 17:29Victor, you dont have a point. Dont you see what these Ibo guys are doing to our image home and abroad? Why is it that illicit drug peddling usually involves Ibo people. You cannot separate drug crime from Ibo people in Nigeria just as many Yorubas are involved in yahooyahoo.

10 July 2009 17:31Well, something drastic has to be done to eradicate drug pushing in Nigeria. Not only just punishing the couriers, the net work behind it and the drug barons must be thoroughly exposed and seriously dealt with. Should not the igbo people do a thorough mind searching about being the most involved ethnic group in this drug pushing business in Nigeria? or are they collectively numb?

10 July 2009 17:36Its NOT a matter of Ibo or not, many ppl from many parts of Nig are in this thing. But like in all things in Nigeria, the ibos are more in every sector…, business, work o, traveling and living abroad and trafiking etc.
Its because Ibos are the most populous ppl in Nig, that is why they appear more in all things both good and bad.

10 July 2009 17:39Shuppy is right. Why is it majority of the people nabbed smuggling drugs are from the south east? Is it because they want to be rich overnight or are they keeping up with the Joneses or in this case Chukwus? Nigeria is getting a bad name abroad for drug smuggling and 419’s.

IGBO guys has changed the name of this country to another thing entirely all over the world with their ellicit drug
dealings. ln every 10 colour people arrested in Europe, Igbo contingent responsible for 85%, so, what is tribalistic
or sentimental about that. We need to call spade-a-spade, irrespective of anything. Until these guys are brutally killed
in presence of their children and family, they will not stop. 419 and Drug business is highly common among my Nna

ONE THING IS THAT THE GOVERNMENT IS ONLY USING THE SECURITY MEN FOR SACRIFICE BECAUSE THOSE IN LEADERSHIP KNOWS HOW TO COMBAT THE CRIMES IN THE COUNTRY BUT BECAUSE THEY NEED BLOOD TO SERVE THEIR JUJU THEY WILL WANT PEOPLE TO DIE MORE EVERYDAY BE THEY THE SECURITY MEN OR ORDINARY MAN.THE CRIME OF THE LEADERS IS THE GENERATOR OF THE CRIMES OF THE CITIZENS.BE THEY IBO ,YORUBA,HAUSA ETC.IN AS MUCH AS NIGERIA REMAIN ONE OUR LEADERS ARE THE CAUSE OF THE CRIMES IN THE SOCIETY.NEVERTHELESS AN ORDINARY MAN CAN STILL DO SOMETHING REASONABLE TO SURVIVE INSTEAD OF INVOLVING IN DRUG,ROBBERY,KIDNAPING,ILLEGAL BUNKERING ETC.

Most of the people in government houses are criminals, they did not win elections but because of injustices here and there they declared the animals in human skin winners. Nigerians are hungry, what do you expect the masses to do. Our so called leaders does not have the Almighty God at heart .
Once good leaders like Fashola are in power, there shall be less crimes in this great Nation. When Yakubu Gowon was in power, did we experienced all these. I blame our leaders. We all know the truth.

so that they can have thier own pasport
and stop disturbing other nigerians with thier criminal actvities
its very bad that the ibos have the highest numbers of prisioners in england; malaysia unites states etc
the most annoying part of it is that they dont do thier business with sense
the yorubas have being doing drugs many years before the ibos enter the buiness the moment the ibos enter they fuck everything
same thing with 419 buiness they fuck the buiness of 419 fraud is a universal crime but the ibos turn it to business and start doing it openly setting up offices and moving in convoys of cars without any visisble means of lifely hood

11 July 2009 14:34why r some people too tribalistic? believe it or not, outside the boundaries of nigeria, no one cares to know your tribe, but they see us all as nigerians and as such treat you as potential drug career and look at you with the tendency of exhibiting some criminal tendencies like 419, falsification of documents, etc. this is not the time to tackle things from tribalistic point of view, but a holistic one aimed at crushing this get-rich-quick syndrome. no matter which tribe is involved, crime is crime. come to think of it, what punitive measures are melted out on these offenders? if nothing is done to them and the authorities allow them to settle and go free, then, be ready to witness a great harvest of a nigeria worst than columbia. our men seal these things and convey them everyday out of the country while our women now turn their vagina into drug depots. it is a shame. i weep for nigeria

11 July 2009 17:11It’s very dishertenning that the fellow called Shuppy above and his co travellers are so tribally derailed that all they say strait-away is insult the Ibo’s.
Does it mean then that Drug Tracfficking is all a tribal affair? What is evil is evil, and should be condemned by all - reference to tribe is in my opinion childish and myopic. Lets grow above this tribal farce that has be-deviled us all this years.
My concern is whether the real LORDS OF DRUG business shall ever be apprehended and face the wrath of the law (if any). I am yet to read or hear of any of the Masters (Kingpins) in this wicked act being caught and thereafter prosecuted.
Lets wake up Nigerians and fight for our freedom and future generations, freeing ourselves from the claws of Looters called Leaders in the High places - effectively entrenched through the political vehicle called PDP in recent times.

11 July 2009 18:31It is high time Nigeria government enact Law that would put an end to all this mess. The best law to enact is death by hanging. The ealier Nigeria government start enforcing it the better. Aye-a-laye and his brother Shuppy,I believe that both of you do not have anything meaningful doing because if you do and have met or associated with Igbos, you wouldn’t come in such online environment and make stupid and baseless comments.I believe that people who go about castigating people based on tribe or by virtue of their association has nothing to offer to the kind of Nigeria I would love to see for the younger generations and those yet unborn enjoy.

13 July 2009 15:14It is petty to draw inference along tribal lines. Greed and deperation cuts across tribes and races. 13 July 2009 15:20Address the issue, not the People/Tribe. This same message I preached to the guy that accused the Yorubas of rituals. Just cross-checked: Aunty ‘Wunmi’ (the Popular Yoruba Actress pushed Drug like Ifeanyi), so also Maasi CNN (Ngige) & T. A. Orji - ‘Their Excellencies’ paid visits to Shrine like ‘Egbon’ Wale Alausa. Whatever the Tribe is - All were been possessed & controlled by specific spirit responsible for such acts. Agreed, certain attitude may be prevalent more with some people, but as much as it’s not everybody that’s involved - it may be unfair to generalize. GOD BLESS NIGERIA.
