The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has raised an alarm over some fraudulent text messages sent to subscribers purported to have emanated from him.
He also decried how conmen have been dropping his name all over the place.
Speaking during the monthly Holy Ghost service of the church last weekend, the revered man of God said one of the SMS that was circulated last Thursday imploring people to pray against the death of their loved ones between 11.00p.m. to 1.00 a.m. that day did not emanate from him.
According to the former university teacher, the SMS is among many ways his name has been used for ungodly act.
Pastor Adeboye cited a case of an unemployed man who printed a business card in his name (Adeboye’s name) signed at its back and presented it to one of the influential men in the country that the 67-year old pastor requested that the highly placed man give him a job.
Speaking further, Pastor Adeboye said, it was when the latter called to confirm, that he discovered.
He also described how someone had collected thousands of dollars in his name promising his victim based abroad that Pastor Adeboye wants to use it to bless anointing oil for him.
Thousands of dollars had changed hands before the fraud act was discovered.
The man of God, popularly called Daddy G.O. by his teeming church members, sternly warned the congregation not to believe anything from any quarters except he spoke by himself.
Besides, he added that he does not send text messages and does not need one to communicate to his congregation.
“To be forewarned is to be fore-armed. If they ask you to pray now, they may ask you bring money later. Do not believe any message or prophecy except the one you hear from me,” he admonished the faithful.
One of the GSM providers had sent a message last Thursday that Pastor Adeboye urged people to pray from 11:00pm to 1:00am against losing over their loved one.
The message which reads: “Pastor E.A. Adeboye sent a message that we should pray for 11:00pm to 1:00am that God should not let us mourn over our loved one, please send to others,” sent panic all over the place as Nigerians sent the messages to their friends, relations, associates in and out of the country.

Adeboye is one of the pastors that I personally respect and I listen when he speaks. Therefore, criminals and what have you should please leave him alone and do their trade elsewhere. 6 July 2009 20:27Conmen are conmen, and forever they will remain so. This is not the first time the names and signatures of influential people are doctored. Similar thing was done to the likes of Chief Awolola of blessed memory and even Nigeria’s most corrupt leader of all times, IBB, his name and signature was used as prank and so was chief MKO Abiola of blessed memory.
All we need do is carefulness and vigilance and scrutine every word or deed.
May God have mercy.

7 July 2009 07:25My ex girl sent the text to me and i live in London, thou i am not FOOLED by all those so called born again as i believe tyhat there is God and no more, i donot go to a church nor mosque. we have at least a church on every strrt in nigeria and still we have more problems everyday……………….Adeboye is a better Pastor that most of them, but to me all those that use the name of God to make money is EVIL, whether you use a text or build a church on Lagos -ibadan Xpressway…. its all 4.1.9 of the highest order.

In my own church - The Anglican Communion- we do not engage in hero worship our eyes are only on the Lord who is our Ultimate Guide. There is no way a member of my church can be decieved using any the name of our priests. The Leaders of these OTHER churches should work hard to discourage their members from turning them into “gods”. It is this kinds of practices that leave people open to such scams!! Some one sent that text to my wife and I sternly scolded her to stop allowing man to shake her fate in God. How can God say all the people in Nigeria should pray against sudden death in their family? All the people in Nigeria? please!

If at all you do not have anybody who is old enough to be your father, at least, you should have seen an Elderly person’s picture before. This is a man that can be regarded as one of the most successful men in Nigeria. He bagged his PhD before 30yrs, built his own house, married and aspired to be the youngest VC in Nigeria, before God called him.

Conmen are sharp guys but on this occassion if they are the ones circulating this text, well, goodluck to them, let God be their judge. I also will not rule out the fact that, this could be a marketting gimic by GSM Operators to rip off more people as they always do.., I wonder if we have telecoms Regulatory body that could help trace the truth of this case…EVEN IF WE HAVE THEM, WILL THEY INVESTIGATE? A lot of the people who have posted comment here to attack others who simply expressed their opinion were the same gullible christians who fell foolishly for the “419″ text msg believing it to have proceeded from Pst Adeboye.Gullible christians started praying out of fear instead of faith.Even if it was an angel of death that was to pass over the land,what happened to protection by the blood of Jesus,our passover Lamb? I think a lot of professing christians are bewitched like the Galatians.They too lazy to know God for themselves,too lazy to search the scriptures like the Berean christians and at the end look up to man instead of God .Christians should be told that the curtain that seperated the clergy from the laity was torn from top to bottom at the death of Jesus and everyone who now believes in Him has equal access to God. God is still in the business of speaking directly to His children and does not need any oher mediator save His son Jesus Christ. 7 July 2009 11:48The name Adeboye is a good name and that is why people are using his name for favour. If it were a bad name nobody will use it.
For some of us to say that Adeboye’s followers see him as God is mischievious. There is no way a Christian can claim to love God if he does not cherish his or her earthly pastor. So it is incumbent on Christians to love their Priests or Pastors first before you say you love the God you have not seen. This does not mean they are worshipping the man of God. Koilta, please watch what you say because you say sometimes will stand against you in the day that it matters most. Those who are impassonating G.O. may not even be Christians, if they are, they are not yet broken. God will forgive them because another thing is that our society has turned Nigerians into bad people. If a big man does not give you a note you don’t get attention. If we are in a society where merit counts, you will not see people trying to cheat. G.O. even said the ‘big man’ called to verify that the poor guy was actually from him.
