July 03, 2009 14:41, 1,995 views

By Ayodele Lawal & Bayo Adetu

Fans in Nigeria have to cough out N250,000 to watch United States of America Rhythm and Blues star, Robert Sylvester Kelly, popularly known as R-Kelly.

He arrived Nigerian yesterday for the ThisDay Music Festival 2009 beginning today in Lagos.

On arrival, the American star and his entourage were received by representatives of ThisDay newspaper and teeming fans.

R-Kelly, who is in Nigeria for the first time, will have a special VIP performance where each fan who will seat in the front row to watch him will pay N250,000 for a ticket.

Other tickets for today’s performance go for between N150,000 and N100,000 respectively.

P.M.News learnt that due to the high profile nature of the show, the venue of today’s event has been kept a closely guarded secret. Only those who buy the ticket will know where the show will take place.

The R & B star will also stage another performance in Lagos tomorrow. Tickets for this particular show are in four categories: VIP – N25,000, Golden Circle – N15,000, Super Regular – N10,000 and Regular- N5,000.

P.M.News further gathered that the shows will be rounded off in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja on Sunday after which R-Kelly and his team will return to their base.

Fans that will watch him in the Abuja show will pay N60,000 for VIP, Golden Circle and Regular positions attract N25,000 and N10,000 respectively.

Before coming to Nigeria, R-Kelly had performed in Cape Town, South Africa on 27 and 29 June 2009.

He is also expected to perform at the Wembley Arena, London, next Wednesday.

Can somebody tell us how much speculators paid in Cape Town, South Africa to watch this same show. Very shameful that we have not learnt our lessons. That was why those that have stolen Nigeria to a standstill fought Soludo to standstill not to re-evaluate our Naira. If Late Gen Idiagbo were to be the Head of State, all those that will pay N5,000.00 and above for thsi show will be sent to jail. - Rule of Law.

Nduka has not told us what his aims are in bringing these so called foreign stars to Nigeria who nobody listen to their music in America to the detriment of our local musicians. If Nduka is sincere about promoting Nigeria, let him turn to our creative arts. Reading for instance is a dying art in Nigeria. Our crumbling institutions offering course in the entertainment and related field could use a fraction of what Nduka expend annually on this jamboree. How many Nigerian artistes are promoted by Ameicans to perform before their people in the US? Nigerians must start believing in themselves instead of investing so much on everything foreign, which in most cases cannot pass the test abroad.

    3 July 2009 19:08

This is absolute rubbish and exploitation.Michael Jackson’s show in London cost 50 pounds. Why should people now pay N250,000 to see R Kelly. After you will expect foreign donors.
I feel sorry for you people.

    3 July 2009 19:12

NDUKA YOU BE THIEF O ,haba dis is too much just for a night, ok tell me how much did we watch R KELLY show here in mother city cape town, the highiest VIP price was R650 =80dollars, Golden cirle price was R350=45dollars.super regular was 250= 30dollers and the regular side was 100rand which is like 12dollars. so my fellow nigerian if am lying go to http://www.computicket.co.za . .no south african will watch a show for 1500dollars which is like 250.000naira in nigeria to my own calculation. even the last confad worldcup were declared free by FIFA when the people cant pay high price, only the the 1st match and italy and brazil were paid for

  22. Truth

    3 July 2009 19:15

Its can only happen in Nigeria. If R. Kelly performs here in UK is only 40 pounds, even late King of pop Micheal Jackson ticket is 75 pounds. Why people are so selfish in Nigeria. Am sure those that will be there will fraudsters and pen robber politicians.

Not even michael jacksons de-kings of entertainment and other superior stars promotion is a rip off as this. well, maybe this is the best way known to this unfortunate Nigeria hungry promoters, on how to show Nigerians extravegant patronage of an American demi-idol, R Kelly.
if you because of too much cash gain decides to promote happiness, and not because of the impact of the socialization, then your name maybe heard, but, will immediatetly be spat off with a ranging tong and heavy heart! just like the mention of evil-babangida, pig-obasanjo, sick carmel-yardua and some PDP thieves and other miscreants in Nigerian society.

“laura” what is so cool there? are you working or you be run girls. Let me tell you, even here in USA, nobody will watch R.Kelly for more than $250.00 for V.I.P seats and you are talking of about $1,500.00. When will all these rubbish stop? Nduka has always be a useless man owning ThisDay staff salary.

    4 July 2009 01:14

Fellow Nigerians,if you think that Nduka is stupid, pls think twice.for he is not.Nduka can’t tell some classes of Nigerians not to bother themselves coming to this show, thats why the venue is kept secret until you pay for your ticket.

The show is for pen robbers in Goverment only.it’s not expensive to them.so pls, don’t kill ND for using his brain.

  39. Doyin

    4 July 2009 03:49

N250,000 is no small money by any standards. To those who can afford this amount of money to watch the show, good for them. Only wish they will gladly cough out the same amount to help people with genuine needs in the society or even their relations, should the situation require it. I cannot fault those willing to pay so much to watch R Kelly. Its their money, whether legitimately earned or stolen. I simply wont do same, even though I can afford to, period.

Americans will never pay 2k usd to watch him singing…Nigerians can be stupid sometimes with their plans

  41. Frank Isoh

    4 July 2009 09:02

What do you expect in a society that is highly consumptive and not productive? People with this kind of money to spend on a musician whose videos are everywhere should spare a thought for the less privileged amongst us such as motherless babies. Putting a smile on the faces of such lovely creatures of God is, in my view, a nobler cause than watching any musician perform on stage at such an obscene amount. I do ,howevr, recognise that people are free to spend their money the way they like but I am yet to see any society develop on the strength of such wasteful expenditure pattern. And I hope these rich folks pay their taxes as appropriate.

Are you gonna tell d man next door, on how he burns his cash? Hell NO? Are you gonna suffer with the guy next door, if he eventually awash in debt and die bankcrupt???

Mr Nduka does not need to be called names, people can only do that if only they have a good knowledge of what it takes him to get R.kelly down to nigeria, who knows,he might even be doing some fans a big favor.

9nija and status symbol, its funny cos this same R.Kelly would be playing in UK next week with just £40 gate fee which is less than N15,000. keep bridging the gap Mr Nduka that is your contribution abi?

  48. Ayo

    4 July 2009 17:04

this is typical of our ostentatious way of life in Nigeria. it is stupid for anybody to pay 250k for a show. the late king of pop was billed to perform at the 02 arena and the ticket was officially around £75. the highest amount paid for the ticket on resale was £300 (equivalent to 75k in Naira). when will our opportunists in Nigeria imbibe the spirit of charity in a country where so many people are struggling to feed with their meagre resources.

  49. Deji Kaye

    4 July 2009 18:57

There is no doubt that Nigerians are amongst the most stupid people on this planet. The American president has just dissed them and they are prepared to pay 250,000 for a ‘has been’ R&B singer. In London, they won’t even pay 20 pounds to see R Kelly. Good luck to you all, may you continue to throw your worthless currency away.

  50. Omoboriowo

    4 July 2009 21:09

I don’t believe that any Nigerian in his right senses will pay a quarter of a million Naira to watch to R Kelly perform.
What a hell? Even Michael Jackson’s proposed tour in London, didn’t cost as much. Govt must look into this thing and know what Nduka and his co. travelers are gaining from this yearly nonsense and whether appropriate taxes are being paid after each tour.

  51. shynna million

    4 July 2009 21:36

well 250000 naira is big because you look at from Nigerian currency value perspective. But that is like 1500 dollars which is not a big deal in USA…………………..Nigeria is messed up.Our currenvy is something else…..may God bless Nigeria

I think some are so stupid and wicked How can one spend 250k to see R. Kelly on stage when there are many beggers on our streets and villages and most of do not know the road that leads to our homes Remember the story of Jesus and Nicodemus in the bible.

    5 July 2009 12:38

This is racism and class differenciation of the highest other. This is what is causing most of the problems in Nigeria today. What does Ndukwe mean by staging a show for the rich and mighty at an undisclosed place at 250k and after that, for the peasants at 4k. It is this disperity that makes some people to take up arm to rob or resort to kidnapping these political criminals and their relations. I tell you am living in Europe and since my years here, shows are not staged like this. Shows are for everybody be it in an open air or in a big hall which we do not still have uptill now. Again there is no show that i have withness that cost more than 40Euros. Therefore this means that thisday are using this method every year to make excess profit. Though the organization is out to make profit but this is too much. Finally, I ll advice Ndukwe and co not to let people feel or know that you are making them look inferio or second class in Nigeria. This will go a long way to redusing the rate of crime. Thinkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk.

  57. Bayo Adejumo

    5 July 2009 16:45

This is it, we will get there some day when you watch Naija artiste for like 100Grand. NO doubt people pay 2000dollars to watch people like R kelly back home.So my brothers that do think money should only be put for philantropist idea you are wrong.People spend money for different purposes.Micheal Jackson shook a lady in Asia during is tour then and the lady fainted .How many artiste in Nigeria can cause that to you?If i am buoyant i will also do . If you can travel out to UK,Paris,USA for shopping why cant you watch R.Kelly for n250 grand.

  58. Damola

    5 July 2009 16:51

Well,i don’t blame Laura that said the money is cool..it’s because she has never sweat to get money but she is using what she have to get what she want..As for Nduka, Ndoka or whatever,i don’t blame you..you are in a country which doesn’t have anything good to point out to for the past 48years now which you are going to celebrate your 49th independent by Oct,and you people continue saying Nigeria will be better again, for how long are we going to fooled about this? this 250,000 you are talking about is the same amount to get my new apartment paid for 2years and get it furnished..i have been scotting with a friend since all these while and you pple want to pop out 250k just because of a man who is gonna sing for just 20mins maximum and your 250k will be burnt just like that? while some people outside there suffering and some that doesn’t have anyone to feed them or sponsor them? do you think someone like me will pray for you or course you? everyone who go to watch R.Kelly with 250k are all fooooooooooooools and Crazy…i don’t wanna know who you are, call me if you wanna fight me..+2347033911780…Greedy people

why are you all condemning Laura? Her comment , ‘thats cool’ may mean ‘its cool to have r kelly in Nigeria’ and not talking about the 250k that thisday is thieving from you. you should all direct your arrow of castigation to thisday and not laura

  61. Jrock

    6 July 2009 01:51

I do think it is wrong to call the organizers names. However, it is quite ridiculous and I can’t imagine people shelling out 250 grand for just a VIP spot. It’s funny how the organizers think that there are people willing to pay such an amount. It’s unheard of anywhere else and it’s terrible if they take us for fools. It would be cool, rather, if the show were boycotted. And yes, people are suffering and this is certainly not a good example in a society that is so demoralized at the moment.

  62. jamhal

    6 July 2009 12:38

I found it very funny reading other people’s comment. But I am not laughing because they cannot afford 250k for R.Kelly but the way they said. Anyway, I am on your side guys. That bullshit. How can one pay 250K just to see someone sings? I think what you guys should do is go and wait for those that will buy the tickets at the venue and linch them. They are the thieves that we have been looking for all these while. Anybody that pays that money is a thief.
Mr. Nduka, I think you are becoming a thief too. Here in France, ifI want to watch R.Kelly, I won’t pay more than 50 euros,I have been to shows and I have never paid more than 1000 euros just to watch even artistes that are greater than R.Kelly, the child molester.
