Eagles’ Attack Too Weak —Babangida

July 01, 2009 15:26, 12,764 views

By Adebobola Alawode

Former Nigerian international, Tijani Babangida, has declared that the Super Eagles’ attack is too weak to penetrate the defence of opponents.

The ex-Eagle described the present set of attackers in the senior national team as too feeble and lacking the power to strike, adding that the Eagles are no longer the formidable opponents they once were.

The former Ajax Amsterdam of Holland winger said with three goals from four matches in the South Africa 2010 World Cup qualifying series, he is worried that the team have not been able to find the back of the net as expected of a Nigerian team.

Babangida, a member of the Atlanta ’96 soccer gold medal winning team castigated the Eagles’ attack for not being able to increase their goal tally despite parading the best set of strikers in Africa.

Speaking on Brilafm early today, he said: “the Eagles’ strike force is too weak. They have not been able to score many goals. I must confess, they lack the prowess to score goals. This is a bad development for the Eagles, who are targeting to play in the World Cup next year and the race for who qualifies for the World Cup may eventually depend on the number of goals scored.”

He, however, advised Coach Shuaibu Amodu not to play the attackers out of position because this is capable of destabilising the players.
