Soccer Star Shot Dead Two Weeks After Father’s Murder

By  Tunde  Oyedele /Warri

The celebration of the reigning 2009 Globacom Premier League champions, Bayelsa United, has ended in tragedy, following the death of the team’s captain, Abel Tabor, who was killed by armed robbers, last night.

P.M.NEWS gathered that the captain had left the team’s camp in his blue Honda car, in the company of his sibling and friends when robbers attacked them along Sapele/Warri road. Reports have it that they had left the team’s camp in Oghara and were on their way to Warri when they were attacked. Tabor lost his life while other occupants suffered minor injuries.

The news of the demise of the skilful skipper, who did not feature in the match against Warri Wolves, halted the week-long celebration that the club had planned to hold for winning the league, as the players, coaches and the supporters of the club were thrown into mourning. Head coach of Bayelsa United, Monday Odigie and some of the team-mates of the dead player have continued to pay glowing tributes to the late Tabor. They described him as a dedicated player, who, until his death, never had any misunderstanding with anybody.

Odigie, who wept uncontrollably when the news of the dead player filtered into camp, said the deceased had earlier, after receiving the Glo League trophy, dedicated the crown to his late father, whom he buried a fortnight ago. He was also killed by armed robbers. According to Odigie: “Tabor didn’t play the match against Warri Wolves. As a matter of fact, being the captain, we had to give him the opportunity to receive the trophy. He told us that he was going to dedicate the trophy to his late father, whom he buried two weeks ago. It is this tragic incident that cut short our celebration for winning the league. I must confess this is terrible news.”

While Odigie was still lamenting the demise of Tabor, the Balyesa United players have a different angle to the death of their colleague. They think his death is mysterious because Tabor and his father were killed by armed robbers within two weeks. They are all sad that the late Tabor won’t be part of their proposed week-long plan to celebrate the league triumph. For Bernard Okoronwanta, ‘‘the death of Tabor is unfortunate; it is as if something like a stone has been thrown into our celebration party. We had planned to celebrate our Premier League victory with a lavish party. It is unfortunate that he is no more.” Meanwhile, the corpse of the deceased has been deposited in a mortuary, while the family will soon meet to announce burial arrangements.

It is unfortunate because Nigerians don’t like progress, they kill one another because of progress. That is the reason why the Whites are better of, most times. All these killers may God forgive you and give you a heart of repentance. My brother may God grant you eternal rest in Jesus Name.
