Naming Our Streets To Reflect Our True Culture

November 04, 2008 14:48, 29 views

By Odunayo Joseph

Hardly can one open any of our dailies and magazines or listen to any of the electronic media without reading or being fed with news about one mind-boggling act of corruption or the other. It is either the public is being fed with reports of alleged clandestine moves by influential people and agencies in our country to either shield corrupt ex-governors, found to have looted the public treasury from being tried; or for those on trial, to frustrate outright their continued trial in the law courts. What about incessant reports on embezzlement of public funds, inflation of contracts running into billions of dollars and payments for contracts not executed, among others.

Since corruption is steadily being seen and taken as a norm in our society, it won’t be out of place if we start re-identifying our streets and roads nationwide to reflect our penchant for corrupt practices with names such as: Corruption Road, Embezzlement Avenue, Godfatherism Lane, Election Rigging Close, Contract Inflation By-Pass, Child Abuse Road, Child Trafficking Avenue, Oil Bunkering Boulevard, Cultism Way, Power Recycling Avenue, Drug Barons Lane, Hunger Avenue, 0-0-0 Formula Close, 0-0-1 Formula Close, 1-0-0 Formula Close, Unemployment Way, Public Schools Bastardisation Way, Financial Recklessness Avenue, Ghost Projects Road, The Untouchables Boulevard, False Fronting, 419 Boulevard, Man-Know-Man Street, Bribery Street, Justice Miscarriage By-Pass, Money Laundering Way, Poverty Lane, Millionaires Avenue, Billionaires Avenue, Trillionaires Avenue, Illegal Wealth Accumulation Ring Road, Globe-Trotting Governors Boulevard, LGA Chairmen Looters Avenue, Unresolved High Profile Murder Road, Eye Service Close, Rituals Street, Non-Performing Governors Close, Corrupt Elite Way, False Assets Declaration Road, Kickback Street, Witch-Hunting Way, just to mention but few.

For demarcation purposes, in highbrow areas in cities such as Abuja, Lagos, Port Harcourt and in all our state capitals, names such as: Corruption Phase 1, Corruption Phase 5, Looters Haven, Beneficiaries of Spoils of Office Reservation Area, Executors of Federal Ghost Contracts Quarters, Executors of States Ghost Contracts Quarters, Executors of Local Councils Ghost Contracts Quarters, Sycophants Reservation Area 2, Big Time Looters Haven, Foreign Account Holders Reservation Area, Political Advisers Reservation Area etc, will suffice.
