Eagles Set To Dim Leone Stars

October 10, 2008 18:24, 117 views

The Super Eagles of Nigeria are set for a crunchy tie against Sierra Leone with a bid to dim the Leone Stars in a World Cup qualifier. The result will, however, not affect their qualification for the second round, though it would enhance their rating in the qualifying series.

The Eagles have won all the five matches played so far in the qualifiers. They will be out to maintain their unbeaten run, hence the trouble that hangs on the neck of the Leone Stars in tomorrow’s game scheduled for the Abuja National Stadium by 4 p.m.

The team’s camp in Abuja is bubbling with life ahead of the match. Most of the players invited for the game honoured the call to wear the national colours.

Going by the words of the Eagles’ skipper, Nwankwo Kanu, there is no doubt that the star-studded Nigerian team will not compromise the desire to pick the three points at stake in the qualifier and put the country in good stead for seeding in the draw for the second round of the World Cup qualifier scheduled for Zurich, Switzerland on 22 October.

“It is all about what you want very much. In a football match, the points go to the team that wants to win the most. We have the biggest motivation to win because it will be good for us to be seeded for the third and final phase beginning next year.

“We are surely not resting on our oars. It’s a race and it has just started.” Getafe of Spain striker, Ikechukwu Uche, declared that the Eagles won’t spare the Leone Stars in the match. “We might have qualified for the 2010 Nations Cup in Angola, but we have our pride at stake. Sierra Leone cannot come to Nigeria and beat us. Though they have a good team, the Leone Stars won’t find us easy.” Uche is the Eagles leading scorer in the qualifier with three goals.

Other players like Marseille of France’s defender, Taye Taiwo, Osaze Odemwingie, assistant captain Joseph Yobo and Chidi Odiah all target a convincing victory over the visitors in the crucial match.

But Chief Coach of the Leone Stars, Ahmed Kanu said his team won’t be an easy nut to crack for the Eagles. He said they are in Nigeria for at least a point. His players, like England-based forward, Alhassan Bangura and Mohammed Kallon have reiterated that they are not afraid of Nigeria as they are in the country to revenge the lone goal scored against them in the first leg of the qualifier in Freetown in June.

They must be dreamers. I can’t see them out playing nor scoring us. Eagles, just mould them tomorrow! Your target is to spell the country Sierra leone. Good luck to you!
