September 08, 2008 15:56, 44 views

The Secretary-General of Nigeria Wushu Kungfu Federation, Omonkhgbele Monday, says his federation is set for the National Open championship, slated for 9-14 September, at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna.

The scribe told P.M.Sports that a technical course will be held during the championship for judges and officials, who will officiate at the forthcoming National Sports Festival in Kaduna.

“We are set for the championship in Kaduna. The tourney is to test-run the facilities at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium ahead of the Sports Festival. The course will prepare our judges, officials and athletes for the Kaduna 2008 National Sports Festival,” he said.

Monday also disclosed that the organisers have contacted resource persons, who will give lectures during the technical course. He disclosed that representatives of all the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, are expected to take part in the championship and the technical course.

“We want our members across the country to take part in the championship and the technical course because the event will help the officials, who will be officiating at the National Sports Festival in Kaduna, later this year,” he said.

Commenting on the popularity of  Wushu Kungfu in the country, Monday admitted that the game is not popular like football, basketball and boxing. He stated that his federation has introduced the game to the primary and secondary schools across the country.

“We have started introducing the game to the primary and secondary schools, and we are happy that the pupils love it. By the time we begin to organize regular tournaments, the game will be embraced by all in Nigeria,” he concluded.
