‘Road Accidents Claim 25,939 Lives’—FRSC

September 08, 2008 16:17, 51 views

By Bayo Adetu

The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has disclosed that road accidents claimed at least 25,939 lives between 2003 and 2007, in Nigeria.

Revealing this, Corps Marshal and Chief Executive of the FRSC, Mr. Osita Chidoka, said in the last four years (2003 – 2007), in Nigeria, a total of 55,195 accident cases were reported, leaving 25,939 dead and 85,976 injured.

“Unfortunately, from these figures, 40 per cent of persons involved are breadwinners of their families.

“Consequently, many young children and mothers have become orphans and widows, and have had to shoulder the responsibility of their families.

“Road traffic crash has affected virtually every segment of the population. There is hardly any family that has not suffered the effect of road accident. When accident occurs, one member of a family or the other (sometimes the bread winners) is involved, and this usually has traumatic and economic effect on other members of the family,” Chidoka stated.

He explained further that from September, 2007, till date, a total of 402 road accidents were recorded and the FRSC recovered money in 13 of such cases.

“A total sum of N15,949,065 were recovered at accident scenes and returned to the victims’ families. “The FRSC has also been prompt in rendering assistance to road accident victims. Efforts are presently in place to respond more promptly to save lives of accident victims with the acquisition of more ambulances and towing trucks.

“We are also establishing more roadside clinics along major highways in Nigeria and employ qualified hands to administer first aid to victims,” he added.

This is not a good news. Nigeria has money, but yet we don’t have good roads. Our leaders should be ashame of themselves Olugbo1

The young man, Osita Chidoka at the FRSC is doing a great job as the Corps marshal and I am proud to belong to his generation. However, it is necessary that we recognise that many people still die at accident spots for lack of immediate help. As such I would want Mr. Chidoka to look into ways that would help every Nigerian using the roads to be knowledgable on first aid aplication. Kudos to Chidoka and his Management team at the FRSC for their good efforts but they should not rest until accidents are next to zero.
