A commercial motorcyclist, Doko Amoga, has reasons to regret the trust he had in his customer, Olugbenga Adebayo, who allegedly stole his Bajaj motorcycle which he bought for N90,000 on hire purchase agreement.

However, the police has docked Adebayo at an Ikeja Senior Magistrate’s Court on a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

In charge number MIK/E/240/2008, the prosecutor, Inspector L.O. Mamah, alleged that Adebayo, together with another person at large, committed the offence on 27 July this year, at Aje Street, Pleasure, near Abule Egba, Lagos.

Police further said that the offence is contrary to, and punishable under, Sections 516(7) and 390(9) of the Criminal Code Cap 32 Vol. II Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2003. When the charge was read to him, Adebayo pleaded not guilty.

His counsel told the presiding Senior Magistrate, A. A. Adefulire, to admit his client on bail on self-recognition, pleading that Adebayo was a manager of his own company who could not jump bail.

But the police prosecutor objected to the learned counsel’s submission, stating that the okada rider had faced a tough time since he was dispossessed of his source of livelihood, which he bought on a hire purchase term.

Giving his ruling, Adefulire refused the plea for bail on self-recognition, but admitted the defendant on bail in the sum of N100,000 and one surety in the like sum. The surety, he directed, must be a civil servant of not below salary grade level 08. The court has adjourned the case till 9 September,  for hearing.
