President of the Institute of Chartered Accounts of Nigeria (ICAN), Dr. Richard Uche, has disclosed that the institute has no plans to establish tertiary institutions just as he has said that activities of members would henceforth be closely monitored.

Uche made this known recently when the institute launched six faculties to aid its members in meeting the challenges and skills of accounting in the country.

According to the president, ICAN does not need to establish tertiary institutions “because internship is a distinguishing hallmark of any profession worth its salt.” He added that the faculties would provide the opportunities needed by its members to specialise in their areas of core competence.

“We are persuaded that the faculties will bring together experts committed to the expansion of the frontiers of knowledge in a particular field.” He added that the faculties would provide technical support to their members.

While charging the members of boards of the six faculties to make the difference between the accounting profession and others in its group according to prospects, he advised that they should always call the attention of the institution’s leadership to any challenges they might encounter.

He confirmed that there are bad eggs in the institute.

Speaking with P.M.News, he said he was setting up an Audit Practice Monitoring Arrangement to monitor the operations of all members of ICAN.

According to him, “no doubt, there are some bad eggs among us, but we have a disciplinary tribunal which can discipline erring members.”

He advised Nigerians to report any of the members found operating against the ethics of the institute.
