NYSC Editorial Group Empowers Students

July 24, 2008 14:54, 48 views

The National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) Editorial CD Group of Eti-Osa Local Government I, Lagos State, recently contributed its quota to the development of education in the country by putting up a self-sponsored Essay Competition to empower, orientate and educate students in Senior Secondary Schools in Eti-Osa local government.

The colourful event that produced Tobenna Nwosu, a student of Kings College, as the overall winner with 79% score drew a huge crowd comprising NYSC officials and corp members, teachers, parents, students and guests to the Institute of International Affairs, Victoria Island, where the event took place.

Describing the event as a great accomplishment done in partnership with private sponsors, the Coordinator and CD Supervisor of the Editorial Group, Mrs. Stella Ogunbodede, said, “the need for the competition was informed by our interest in educating the students in Eti-Osa. We noticed that Essay Competition will help in a great way, to encourage reading and creative writing; that was why we embarked on the project. And thank God, we have been able to achieve what we saw as a big dream through the assistance of private sponsors particularly Union Homes. The NYSC officials also gave us moral support.”

Mr. Agbalaya Abiodun, a 2007 Batch ‘B’ corps member and a member of the committee that organized the event, expressed gratitude to all the fellow members of the group for putting in their best and described the success as the result of  a good  teamwork. The Unilorin graduate said: “Though it was very difficult and challenging while running around to get things done, our collective efforts accounted for the success of this event.”

Campus Square
gathered that Kings College, Government College, Victoria Island, and Victoria Island Senior Secondary School emerged as the best three schools in the essay writing competition with 75%, 55% and 47%  scores respectively.
