GSM Charging Machine Installed At Lagos Airport

July 17, 2008 16:08, 77 views

These days, there is a new attraction at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), and the new domestic terminal, MMA2, Ikeja, Lagos.

The epileptic power supply in the country is certainly one of the direct causes of the attraction that the GSM charging points at the Lagos airports, generate among airport users.

Before now, air travellers and other airport users whose phone batteries went flat had nowhere to charge them and this made it difficult to get in touch with relatives,  friends and associates but all this has now become a thing of the past as Sky Bank, at the International airport and Bank PHB at MMA2, have placed several handset charging points that allow users with different types of mobile phones a chance to charge them.

The phone charging machines are placed at the departure, arrival and the VIP lounges of MMIA and MMA2. With the charging machines available, airport users can now charge Nokia, Siemens, Motorola, LG and several other types of phones.

With the new attraction, it is now common to see several people at airport halls, waiting for their phones to be fully charged but there is also a risk of the phone being stolen.

One of the beneficiaries, Mr. Sola, early this week told Runway that he cannot take the risk of moving away from the charging point even for a second.

“I cannot leave my phone here even for one second. You know this is Lagos and there are all kinds of people that come in here; some of them with bad intentions,” he said.

He added: “it is a very good idea to have the gadget here; before, I needed to move around with my chargers. But now, I just come to the airport and charge my phone.”

Runway has, however, observed that with the new development, thugs and thieves frequently move around the charging points with the intention of stealing.

It was also observed that it takes several hours before a particular charger is free as phones take some time to get well charged and others cannot benefit from it at the same time due to the limited number of machines.

To satisfy most airport users, it will require ten times the number of machines now available.
