EFAG Clears Garbage From Drains

Efforts are being made to ensure a flood-free Lagos State this rain season.

In line with the state government’s policy on flood control, the Emergency Flood Abatement Gang (EFAG), last week evacuated over 5,000 tonnes of silt from secondary drains ahead of the expected heavier rains.  In addition, the state government said it has mandated the EFAG in all the 20 zones to double its efforts and ensure that all blocked drains and manholes are de-silted to ensure free flow of water to the Lagoon.

Dr. Muiz Banire, Commissioner for the Environment, disclosed this yesterday during an inspection tour of ongoing projects as part of government’s efforts to prevent floods this year. Banire stated that the body is working round the clock to reduce flooding in the state.  In Dopemu, Alimosho Local Government area of the state, the commissioner stated that a total of 780 tonnes of garbage were carted away by the gang, which he noted would alleviate the flooding problems of Aboru, Agege, Mulero, Iyana Ipaja and Dopemu. Other areas where EFAG recorded remarkable achievements according to Banire include Agege, Apapa, Adeniji Adele, Ozumba Mbadiwe, Surulere, Falomo to mention but a few.

He explained further that 6 major drainage projects were at various stages of completion. According to him when completed, the projects would allow storm water to discharge freely in to the Lagoon and reduce incidence of flooding.  Some of the ongoing drainage projects listed by Banire include: McGregor canal, Obalende, Gbagada Atunrase channel, Atunrase, Ososa canal, Bariga, Baale Okoya channel, Ajegunle, Orile Agege canal, Agege and Mushin-Itire channel. Corroborating the commissioner’s words, the Director of EFAG in the ministry, Engineer Bade Adebowale, hinted that the gang has been well equipped to face the challenges of de-flooding a coastal state like Lagos .  He added that government has equally procured more sophisticated equipment in order to increase the coverage area by the gang and bring succour to the entire people of the state. He noted that calls from the anti-flood hotlines have helped the gang tremendously as the residents readily alert them of the problem areas any time it rains.  He therefore advised members of the public to report cases of flooding in any part of the state to the Authority through any of the following anti-flood hotlines, 07028610338, 07028610339, 07028597558, 07028597559
