Strongman Of Ibadan Politics, Lamidi Adedibu, Dies
June 11, 2008 16:53, 9,716 views
 | | The late Chief Lamidi Ariyibi Adedibu | Chief Lamidi Ariyibi Adedibu, controversial Ibadan politician and self-styled garrison commander of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP), passed on this morning at the University College Hospital(UCH) in Ibadan.
Before his eventual passage, the octogenerian was rumoured to be seriuosly ill, eventhough he often denied it.
PMNews gathered that the late Adedibu had battled the ailment that finally killed him for sometime now. Prior to his death, the late Adedibu was said to have vowed to ensure Senator Kamoru Adedibu, his son, becomes the next governor of Oyo State. As at press time, details of his burial arrangement remained sketchy. PMNews findings further revealed that the late Adedibu was in Lagos this morning for a medical check-up. Some of his aides, who accompanied him to Lagos told PMNews that it was while returning to Ibadan that the octogenerian decided to see someone at the Ibadan office of the Nigeria immigrations Service. He reportedly collapsed at the immigrations office and died, before been rushed to the UCH. Sequel to his death, commercial vehicle drivers and motorcyclists took to the streets, attacking passers by and residents. Also there was confusion at the Molete residence of the deceased, as thugs and politicians unleashed anger on innocent motorists and passers by. Governor Alao-Akala was said to have gone to Abuja this afternoon to brief President Umaru Yar’Adua on the matter.

11 June 2008 17:02May your Soul rest in Peace. Now come to think of the reality on ground, this is the time for real politics in Ibadan and not the Amala type that Baba is alway known for.

11 June 2008 17:10Halleluyah, Ibadan will be peaceful at last. The tyrant is dead and finally peace in a city that deserves it. When men live as if they are God, well the end is now known. I hope others will learn from it too. Obasanjo should take a lesson from this. What will he be remembered for if the table were turned? It is indeed a moment for sober reflections

11 June 2008 17:11So this man can die. Really l thought by his actions and comments death will be scared of him. People like him who play God are still very much around and such people dont know how to learn. But one thing is clear no matter what you have you cannot spend more than what belongs to you the remaining belongs to others– whether you like it or not that is the truth– ADEDIBU has left everything now. The obasanjos, iBBS and others beware

11 June 2008 17:14OOOOOH CAN ADEDIBU DIE???, I THOUGHT HE IS THE STRONG MAN THAT WILL NEVER DIE…….. GOD GOD GOD, YOU SAID THAT WE ARE LIKE A GRASS TO BLOSSOM IN THE MORNING BUT IN THE EVENING IT IS NO MORE, WELL PAPA ADEDIBU, MAY YOU SOUL REST IN PEACE THAT IS IF YOU WILL NOT RESURRECT IN DEATH AT THE NEXT ELECTION IN NIGERIA, BUT I KNOW YOU CAN NOT, REST IN PEACE

11 June 2008 17:21From ALLAH we all came and to him we shall all return. All human beings shall have a taste of death no matter how highly placed you are. Adedibu’s death shoul be a lesson to all that everybody will die one day and will certainly give account of their stewardship while on earth.
Let’s all thik and do good while on earth so that poeple can speak good of us at death.

11 June 2008 17:32I cant remember ever shouting “opeee ooo” (great!) when I heard of someone’s death, and that is exactly what i did when i saw this.
if Adedibu can die, then other Adedibus should remember the popular yoruba saying “iku to pa ojugba eni, owe nla lo n pa fun ni” (the death of one’s mate is a warning signal). may 2008 bundle all of them away!

11 June 2008 17:34it is indeed a new chapter in the politics of oyo state, now that the garrison commander has gone home. adieu, old man, generations yet unborn will try to forgive you for your brand of politics that shortchanged the people of the pace setter state.i hope politicians in the state will learn great lessons from the passage of this PDP so called leader, if indeed he was a leader of whatever sort. he will be remembered for thuggery, violence and negative values of oyo politics.

11 June 2008 17:38I will not beg to disagree with all of you. I am vehemently disagreeing. Talk no ill of the dead. Baba Adedibu was the only politician helping masses. While you could not see the so called decent politicians, baba was available for us to provide Amala, school fees to poor children, market stalls etc. May his soul rest in perfect peace

11 June 2008 17:48I thought Adedibu was going to live for ever . So he died. I am praying that God should start judging him immediately ,because he tore Oyo State apart when Obasanjo was the president of Nigeria. My sympathy goes to Tokyo ,his numerous amala thugs,Governor Alao Akala ,who helped in distabilising the Pace Setter state. We are waiting for those who planted evil in that state to follow him immediately . Rest in peace if GOD allows you but for me no sympathy.

11 June 2008 17:55It is quite unfortunate that Chief Adedibu Lamidi died without knowing GOD at all. Chief Lamidi Adedibu, a political lunatic thought the whole world and Oyo-state in particular is in His control. How can a mere being be thinking irrationally as if he was God? I never believed He(ADEDIBU) can die like fowl.He can not rest in peace because of his evil deed and HIS COLLEAGUES that are yet to die.
I say a big congratulation to Oyo-state and ibadan generally. It is high time Oyo-state regained their peace since the only scally-wag person is gone. No evil man will enter the kingdom of God.
Oyo-state by now should start thanking God for the great thing he has done for them.Adedibu, you can never rest in peace and your evil deed will definately follow your children where ever they are.Amen

11 June 2008 17:58The sudden demise of Adedibu has just confirmed to me that God still listens to Nigeria. Less than 24hours back, in a discussion, someone said that if Adedibu remains alive, his son currently at the N/A would be the next governor. Another discussant vehemnetly said if that is the condition, then Adedibu will be no more before the next election to impose his son on Ibadan indigens. The discussion did not leave the recaltrant Nigerian dictator, Olusegun Obasanjo out of it. As for me, I do not want Obasanjo to die without being brought to ridicule. This is what God must do for Nigerians. Anyway, Adedibu’s (I hate attributing to him all the big names) has once reminded me of King Solomon’s confession: “The world of vanity”
Laolu Owolabi
11 June 2008 18:00No one should rejoice at the death of another. It is a price that is reserved for us all and cannot be seen as punishment for our Deeds on earth. The good and the bad will all die. What is important is what we leave behind. History remains to judge us all. Across the divide, there is a consensus that the man was generous and honest. Honest in the sense that he says it as he sees it. What you see is what you get. Rest in peace and may peace reign in Ibadan my homeland.

11 June 2008 18:01Haaaaaaaaaa, so Adedibu can die…. i am shocked. He owned everywhere in Iwo Road and decides who sells where (ijebu,Oyo or Ibadan). You will tell God how u shared the land.

11 June 2008 18:03i learnt not too long ago that the strongest element ruling our lives is not man against man, but the ideas, ideals, concepts which all turn out to represent a belief system. yes it is true, adedibu is dead but what about the belief system which for over 6 decades he had successfully imbedded in many of our folks? what about the way of life that he had seeded into their bloodstream? what about the attitudes? are these dead?
my fear for my beloved oyo state now is trully more in his death than in his life; unless we begin a cleansing and bridging process.
sleep not oyo, his ideas in his numerous seeds are all over land. did obasanjo not once say baba was his father too?
one consolation though…..that the evil that men do lives after them

Iam extremely happy for Ibadan People and the entire Nigerian. At last, this is a testimony that power belong to God.For me the like of Obasanjo and other power mongers should begining to reconsider their steps.Afterall,God is sovereign and we are just mortal men!

11 June 2008 18:07Late Odolaye Aremu, the Dadakuada Crooner from Ilorin, Kwara State of Nigeria praised Ladmidi Adedibu about 20/25 years ago this way: ADEDIBU, OMO AJE T’ORAJA TO NBERE ENI, A GBA KOBO MEJI NINU TORO(Toro was 2.5kobo), ONI NKAN KOO, ADEDIBU GBAA, ADEDIBU LO SI OJA, O KO ADIRE BO BI OMO ONISE NLA, BEENI KO JI, KO GBE, KO SI RAA, AGBAKO NI ADIRE SE……These occultic praises and similar ones summarises the personality of the late politician AND portrayed greed, force, injustice, and god-like audacity which which the man ruled his political empire. The elites and educated sons and daughters of Ibadan will now heave a sigh of relief… Adieu….IDAMEJI IBADAN TI WON N PE NI ENIKAN…….SUN RE O……..

11 June 2008 18:15It was over the bar for the man. Other political tyrants - like alias politics of ‘do or die’ should now be ashamed of himself. I wish obasanjo reads people’s comments in evening paper and see what will last him - ‘death’ . When good people died, people were always sober and pray for their souls to rest in perfect peace. I don’t think this man deserves it because he had killed many souls both in Ibadan and outside because of his dirty politics. Oyo state should be happy now and live in peace. All bad politicians who have no mercy for the downtrodden masses should die like fowls. amen

11 June 2008 18:29With great delight I read some of the comments above. I share your feelings, especially because I am a true born of OYO STATE and IBADAN in particular. I would however defer from most people that want to put all the blames on the Late Adedibu, I think the so called Elites in Ibadan should share the greater percentage of the blame. What were the likes of Olunloyo, Akinjide, Rasidi Ladoja, Chiefs Akinyemi, Akinyele, Balogun, Adeojo, and other prominent sons and daughters of Ibadan thinking when Adedibu was reigning like there was no other reasonable and talented politicians in the Land. We should not forget that ” Enikan ki je awade opo eniyan lonje Jamoo” Adedibu ran a successful “political family” albeit like a tyrant, but no one I say no one was able to withstand him. Why was Ladoja removed like nobody? Why couldn’t Balogun, Adeojo and Akinjide withstand him? All because he knew how to play the politics. He knew that he had to work with people, he fed the hungry, he helped the needy. Why Akinjide with all his money was too classy for the poor, Ladoja did not perform well as a governor, Adeojo believed he could become governor only by using thugs. Noooooo, what we should do in Ibadan is to start respecting the grassroot, the drivers, motor part sellers, market women and let see if the Elites would do something positive for the people. As a Christian, I do not believe in praying for the dead. But we should start now to remove all the bad legacies of Chief Adedibu. First, recall his son from the Senate, his in law from the senate and banish Obasanjo from Ibadan. Thanks.

11 June 2008 18:29NAWA OOOOOOOOO, so this man can DIE, But I think this New could be a lesson for the Powerless Politician people that called themselves Powerful people. INFACT GOD IS GREAT, UNCHALLENGEABLE GOD THAT CAN DO AND UNDO.

11 June 2008 18:30It is appointed unto man to die once, after that judgement. For everyone occupying a leadership position in Nigeria remember
that one day you will be no more, and you shall be remember for whatever good or evil you have contributed to the Nigerian economy, politics, education and life of the masses. If you are still alive today, take the advantage and make amends.

IS IT THE TRUTH? 2. IS IT FAIR TO ALL CONCERNED? 3. WILL IT BUILD GOODWILL AND BETTER FRIENSHIP? 4 . WILL IT BE BENEFICIAL TO ALL CONCERNED?
THESE, I SAY, ARE GOD’S WAYS. WE DON’T HAVE TO BE RELIGEOUS. WITH THESE , YOU OBVIOUSLY HAVE THE FAIR OF GOD IN YOU. THEY SAY WE SHOULD NOT JUDGE. PLEASE ASK THESE QUESTIONS AND RELATE THE ANSWERS TO ADEDIBU. YOU HAVE NOT JUDGED, BUT YOU CAN THEN SAY WHETHER YOU’LL LIKE TO BE LIKE HIM. I REST MY CASE

I hope having men like that in all republic is not a curse on Oyo State. Anyway, I wish Alhaji Ariyibi Adedibu soul’s to rest in perfect peace, thats if all his past deeds will allow that.

11 June 2008 19:25Good news it may be that the ‘Garrisson Commander’ of Ibadan politics is dead. However, it shows how small the brain of the educated elite if OYO STATE is in allowing an illitrate thug to rule supreme in the time when development was most need. Where is Akala going to hide? At last the Court of Appeal can deliver a judgment without fear of any reprisal.

11 June 2008 19:47It is a taboo in Yoruba land to rejoice at a person’s death, but I think that just like the day Abacha died, Ibadan people should take to the street in their Sunday best and rejoice at the long overdue riddance of a monumental rubbish! The challenge now is for genuine change seeking Ibadan indegens, nay Nigerians to rise and effect a change. I can not but pity though people like Lam, Tinubu, Akande etc who in an act of unbelieveable, even downright, sucidal desperation have chosen to side with Adedubu. Finally, the waiting list (1) Obasanjo (2) Babangida (3) Saraki (4) Anenih………..

11 June 2008 23:51I Knew death was so near this man who rated himself as God,he with the help of obasanjo silenced eminent oyo state elder statesmen,he boasted and got a governor of a state impeached,he brought in thieves into power,many lives were wasted,many children dropped out of school,amala and ewedu became the business of d day in ibadan,i once had the singular honour of meeting Senator Ladoja here in london at oxford street and we both lamented about the decay in governance initiated by the garrison commander,i being an ibo man,encouraged him not to give up and that God would visit oyo at his own time and now is the time,the same way God removed abacha for us ,he has done it again,i dont rejoice at his death but it baffles me when my father;s mate is ruining a state.Now to Akala,if u like run to the president of united states,END TIME IS NEAR! 12 June 2008 01:07This is to prove that God is sovereign over all men; what is man and who was adedibu if not the power behind him i.e obasanjo who will one day answer the call like him. This istime to think and repent if he has conscience at all. Congratulations to good people of oyo state for a new era in politics. Adedibu’ children should try not to follow the way of their father;

12 June 2008 01:12The Saddam Hussein of Ibadan politics is gone , His corpse should be dragged on the streets of Nigerians in full glare of the People he oppressed , and his remains fed to the dogs , His wives and children should be tormented and tortured as thier father did to many people . And also his Governor should be impeached.Let his DNA never prosper and that Idiot of a son he has in the senate should be thrown into prison.

12 June 2008 01:23May your soul rest in pieces. So you can died, where are your Gods and your BABALAWOs? Can’t he, Lamide, save his life with Oyo State Government money? Where was Alao Akala that provided N5m for his treatment some weeks ago . Whatever you sowed you will reap. You have another query to answer in front of God, I already knew that you are not going to heaven. I pray that God will forgive you. But I want Lamidi’s family to know that they will not have peace until they ask for forgiveness from those their Amala Baba had offended.
I congratulate Chief Ladoja and others. E TI REYIN OTA YIN.

12 June 2008 02:18I always believed that God never sleep nor slumber. I believe others will learn from Adedibu, if refused to learn from SAnni Abacha.
Nigeria belongs to all of us, and is a big same to Adedibu Son”Senator”, if people jubilating death of your father.
Is a same, Alao Akala should learn from this as well.

12 June 2008 02:30This is the end of the road for the weak man of ibadan politics.Death is the end.only the weak operate in violence to achieve their aims.He has no legacy to celebrate except violence, huliganism and a band of area boys with NFA,[NO FUTURE AMBITION].ITS GIVEN UNTO MAN ONCE TO DIE AFTER JUDGEMENT.This will teach other politicians in kwara that God has the final decision on people.Rember we are debtors.Kwara will be librated like oyo state. No more Amala politics.

12 June 2008 03:29OHHHH NOOOO….WHYYYYY!!!!!
He is meant to be ridiculed before he died….it is not good to talk ill of the dead, but not the likes of this mare-mortal-calling-himself-god of Adedibu…The last time Nigerians celebrated a death like this was Abacha….other evil so-called-leaders..WATCH OUT!!!
When the owner of the air you are breathing calls for it, you will leave Nigerians money for them…so the balance billions you have will only be used to celebrate your death…what do really want (have billions and people happy you are gone, or just enough too to be comfortable and take care of the masses and ensure peace, and be blessed in death?
Naija peops!!! be relentless in ur prayers, and we all know He answers our prayes…Thank you lord…2 down, many more to go…Your work is not yet finished in Nigeria…

12 June 2008 09:20politics for him was about what he can benefit from it . He had no concerns about upliftin the masses through good governance. Oyo state politics was decided in his sittin room . He delibrately sidlined the inteligensia who could chalenge him instead he create a brand of semi educated ‘leaders’ and appointed them into positions. He made his PA deputy governor. I pray the Ibadans rally round thier elite to deliver them from the present leadership and I hope that the court of appeal will be emboldened to upturn the decision of the lower cort in the governorship election petition.

12 June 2008 09:24One thing i learnt from the politics of Adedibu is that he seemed to be a selfless personality to a great extent.Yorubas do not follow
people just for tips or daily-bread.There must be something good about the man that many of us outside Ibadan politics do not know.
Elites in Ibadan should stop selfish type of politics otherwise another Adedibu will rise again. If politics is a game of number then late Adedibu should be commended to hold firmly to his own.To be candid many of our politicians are selfish and that ADEDIBU capitalised on.Now that Adedibu is gone, let see what Oyo state politics will be.

12 June 2008 09:24The bible says “when the wicked dies the peole rejoice” this indeed is an end of era. Men needs to learn from this that God alone is the only one that knows the next minute. Men should stop living as if they will not die again. This will be the second time in the history of this country that people will rejoice and shout hallelluyah when somebody die. Let’s all our leaders shouldlearn from this that you don’t own the whole world you will use your own time and pass on.

12 June 2008 14:56Either good, bad or worse, the good lesson from the strong, political tower, called Bàbá Làmídì Adédibú ’s life style of operation is for ALL living beings to be CAREFUL!
On this note, I will like to sing a tune of one valued popular masquerade thus:
Ojó kan, yóó jókan! (Definitely, One day will be One day!)
Bó se rere lo bá mò ón se, múra sí i. (If you are good at good deeds, move on persistently)
Bó sì se ìkà lo yàn láàyò, múra sí i (If you otherwise chose to be evil-incarnated /personified, do go ahead)
Sáà ti mò pé, ojó kan yóó jókan! (All you need remember is that, One day, will definitely be, One day!)
Bàbá Làmídì Adédibú’s CHARACTER, like the elders say, follows him about in his tomb!
Ojó kan ti jòkan!
Adieu!

12 June 2008 15:45The death of Adedibu should be a lot of lesson to the people of Nigerians that God did not create the person in cannot take away anytime He want. We have to leave a good legacy for our children and the people at large. The Bible says thou shall not judge for you not to be judged. I live judgement in hands of God Almighty. As for me, his death taught me a great lessons.

12 June 2008 15:58Baba, you have extremely wonderful to the people from Oyo State, If not you that had been caging these elites that littered all over the state, things would have been otherwise. May you rest in perfect peace and may God give us another leader that would always have fear of God. Now that you are no more, I wonder how those tyrrant would be behaving in Ibadan and its environs, may God be with the people of Oyo State and give them fortitude to bear the lost.

12 June 2008 16:00It is very surprising that most Nigerian don’t appreciate “great men” who not only fought gallantly to defend the cultural heritage and socio-political values of their communities but also created positive impact on the lives of the common people. It is a shame that people cannot comment on the legacies of “grassroot empowerment”, which my Uncle with unmatchable political pedigree and outstanding popularity is well known for. Adieu Baba!
