With barely 24 hours to the 2008 UEFA Champions League final between Manchester United and Chelsea Football Clubs of England, their fans back home in Nigeria are already feeling the heat. Our men, SUNDAY AKINTOYE and OLATUNJI OBASA went to town to get their views on the final, which holds in Moscow, Russia, tomorrow
Chukwuma Benson (Man United): The match will be 50-50, but Manchester United will use their Champions League experience to defeat Chelsea. It is obvious that Man. United are the club of the moment. My club just won the English Premier League title and we are still dreaming of winning the doubles by lifting the UEFA Champions League trophy. The last time we won the trophy was in 1999 and we cannot afford to wait any longer because we want to win it again. Do you know why I’m so confident about this team? I will tell you. Their players are the best in the world at least for now. It’s a matter of fact, we parade the best players.
Simeon Job (Man. U. Fan): Chelsea cannot beat us. They can’t match us in any forum. If Chelsea are good, why did they play 1-1 draw against Bolton in their last home match in the English Premier League? I think it is a clear indication that Chelsea cannot win the UEFA Champions League this year. They don’t have what it takes to win the trophy. Or do you think the people call us the King of Europe for nothing? We are a reliable club in the world and we always deliver when it matters most. I want Man. U fans all over Nigeria to remain calm and give the club the necessary support to come out victorious.
Emeka Ogu (Man U. Fan): This is our year. We must win the Champions League title. Why are people clamouring for Chelsea to win this prestigious trophy? Are they good enough? It’s almost 10 years that United last won the trophy, so it’s our chance again. For me, I don’t care whether Mikel Obi or Michael Essien play for Chelsea. I won’t share the African mentality. What I know is that I want people to support the club that have the character to play good football. It is clear that Manchester United are better and I’m confident that Cristiano Ronaldo will sink Chelsea tomorrow. Up United!
Kingsley Nwankwo (Man. U Fan): I am expecting two goals from Ronaldo and one goal from Nani and another from Ryan Giggs. That will be enough to disgrace Chelsea tomorrow. We are too hot for Chelsea. Imagine, we won the F.A. Cup many times and won the English Premier League for years. Tell me, are we not too hot for Chelsea? It is not a matter of sentiment or favouritism, Chelsea can’t equal our records and I don’t see any upset from them. We respect them as a good team, but my club will beat them hands down. We will not even allow the game to go into extra time. We will win the match within the regulation time.
Okozie Amalu (Man. U Fan): We will beat Chelsea 3-0, though we will not underrate them. Manchester United will play their normal game. I know United treat Chelsea with a lot of respect, but we will teach them the lesson of their lives in Moscow tomorrow. Our performance in the English Premier League is a clear indication that we can go all the way to win the UEFA Champions League. It reminds me of 1999 when we won the English F.A. Cup, Premier League and Champions League. I think we will repeat the feat, having won the English Premier League title. What we are waiting for is to win the UEFA Champions League trophy and make it a double this season.
Habib Balogun (Man. U Fan): We are winning the cup. My mind tells me that Manchester United will carry the day. We don’t have to argue about this. The cup belongs to us, Chelsea will try but they will fail. They had similar experience in the league but failed. So, the UEFA Champions League trophy is ours.
Chukwuma Ikeomumu (Chelsea Fan): Anything can happen between Chelsea and Manchester United, but I foresee my team winning the trophy. Frankly, I expect a tough match from the blast of the whistle, but by the grace of God, Chelsea will come out victorious. I think Chelsea deserve to win this year’s UEFA Champions League after we lost the Premier League title to United. Anything short of victory will be a total disappointment but I’ll be glad if Chelsea lift the trophy.
Chibueze Uzegbu (Chelsea Fan): I must tell you that the match will be a tug of war for both teams. We Chelsea fans were disappointed that our club did not win the English Premier League title, but this time around, we want to win something. I’m sure Chelsea will win, not because of the African players that are in the club but because they are a complete team, from the defence to the attack. I can vouch for the present crop of players in Chelsea. They are physically fit and mobile. If you look at them generally, Chelsea are hungry for glory. This is the reason Nigerian Chelsea fans are happy about this team. I will organise a party for my Chelsea fans here in my shop at Agidingbi after the match. We will drink Champagne and enjoy ourselves when Chelsea win the trophy. But I will not be disappointed if the match goes the other way. I’m optimistic that the trophy belongs to us. Chelsea, UP BLUES!
Prosper Ugonna (Chelsea Fan): Manchester United are not a threat to us. I see my boys coming out victorious; what gives me such confidence is that Chelsea have a good defence and attack. The world will see that our players are reliable tomorrow. The last time we clashed with United was in the Premiership and we defeated them 2-1. It means United are beatable and don’t forget that we are playing in Moscow, where we will use our overwhelming support to the fullest. Chelsea’s owner, Roman Abramovich is from Russia. Apart from this, we are the club of the moment and I don’t see United winning this year’s UEFA Champions League. It’s our cup and we’ll win it.
Kingsley Obi (Chelsea Fan): I trust the Blues - my team. Man, it is Blues for ever. What do you expect from a team that have character, cohesion and team spirit? It is victory of course. At the moment, do you know that United fans in Nigeria are under pressure? Ask them, they are afraid of us. Remember how Chelsea defeated United when they came to Stamford Bridge this season. You also saw how we disgraced Liverpool in UEFA Champions League semi final. Look at our performance in recent games, I think Manchester United are in trouble. Their fans should be afraid of us. We will use the 4-3-3 formation to kill their club. There is a place where I plan to celebrate the victory with other Chelsea fans in Lagos.
Stanley Tobi (Chelsea Fan): We will beat Man. United 3-1. I foresee Drogba scoring two of the goals. It is going to be a do or die affair and I am going to reach my friends who are the fans of Chelsea in Nigeria to support the winning club. After our victory, I will hold a party for my friends. UP CHELSEA! We have thousands of Chelsea fans in Nigeria who will support the Blues from here.
Okenla Rufus (Chelsea Fan): Chelsea know what it takes to win the UEFA Champions League and they will not blow this chance away. I support Chelsea because of their aggressive style of play. Apart from that, I love the club because they have good players. We will be disappointed if Chelsea fail to win this year’s UEFA Champions League trophy. So, I’m expecting an outright victory in tomorrow’s match. I think Chelsea have the plan to beat Manchester United. We fans of Chelsea must have something to cheer for this season. I’m hopeful we will win the cup in Moscow on Wednesday (tomorrow).

20 May 2008 22:22Chelsea had never been a treat to Manchester United. I expect a sound football tomorrow and at the end of the day I see man u carrying the cup. This is not the stanford bridge where penalty will be awarded against us even without a reverse angle nor the old trafford where an inexperienced coach will argue red card. The brand of that cup is United 4 life.
