‘Homosexual Act Not Against Bible’—Gay Pastor

May 12, 2008 13:37, 2,095 views

By Simon Ateba

Pastor of the House of Rainbow, a Pentecostal church in Lagos State, Reverend Rowland Jide Macaulay, who is a homosexual, yesterday shocked a television audience in Ikoyi, Lagos when he declared that homosexuality is not against the Bible and the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Reverend Jide, who described his church as part of the metropolitan community churches, was one of the guests at a recorded television show called Moment With MO, anchored by MO Abudu at the City Mall studio in Ikoyi, Lagos. The gay pastor and several other homosexuals and lesbians in the studio yesterday took two good hours explaining to Nigerians that being homosexual is not against the Bible and the teachings of Jesus Christ. Reverend Jide disclosed that he has been a gay since he was 14 years old and had several intercourse with different men. When asked if the Bible does not preach against sodomy, the act of having sex with another man through the anus, the man of God said it was not in the Bible. He said the case of sodomy in the Bible is an isolated one and must not be taken out of context.

He admitted that he practices sodomy and was comfortable with it as a gay. He further explained that marriage in the Bible has nothing to do with sexual orientation but love and trust. He said he is a trustworthy gay. Reverend Jide explained that he does not feel attracted to women no matter how beautiful they may look but on the contrary has strong feelings for handsome men.

While other gays and lesbians in the television studio did not want their faces to appear on television, Jide said he is happy being the face of the faceless. After the television show, Reverend Jide told P.M.News that he is bold to talk about his homosexuality because “that is who I am”. Another young lesbian who did not want her face to appear on television, said that she was introduced to lesbianism by a female friend at a tender age. She said she has dated many girls and had sex with most of them. She also said she has strong feelings for girls and does not feel same for men. When asked if she would like to quit lesbianism, she said never. She added that now that she is a lesbian, she can never become heterosexual again. The City Mall edifice yesterday, looked like a rendevous for gays with several homosexuals and lesbians freely and openly holding hands and kissing in public. Moments with MO, a new TV programme is the Oprah Winfrey television show version in Africa as it bring controversial personalities on air.

We know that PM News In Nigeria fabricate these stories for headline news, Rev Macaulay is a fine man and honest gay clergy, who simply wishes to set the record straight and welcome as many people that are displaced in society and especially by the Christian community. I believe that the version of the interview is certainly not what was printed in this paper, Shame on You PM

sir,may i remind rev macaughly that ascribing connotations that plays to ones fancy has come to stay.what is incontrovertible is that the act is sodomy period, moreso the bible is crystal clear in defining marriage as between a man and a woman epitomised so…….”a man shall leave his father and mother to be joined as one with his wife”…as a sick man, yes sick in the head, rowland jide macaughly is expected to go any lenght to propagate his perverse sexual orientation. If his fathers father and those before him had practiced this odius fantacy of his, please ask him if he would be here today.where there is good health,God wishes every married couple children as sands of the earth.Indeed wonders will never end just a few weeks ago a man incarcerated his daughter for 24 years fathering 7 children by the daughter in Austria and a month ago,a man has fathered 2 children by his own daughter not in secret and believe it with the daughter on tv saying she and her father love each other, while i recall the father in answer to wether he was not aware that it is not normal,he said and so what then went futher to say bible teaches love and trust period this was in australia.rowland jide mac can as well fuck his own mum, i mean dad so long they love and trust each other afterall it is not expressly forbidden in the bible.last line i dont need the bible to tell me sleeping with people of the same sex is perverse as well as immoral, yet he claims to be a pastor wonders shall never end.

Well…….this is a news for your paper but i would say that this out of the professional ethics in journalism. I was also highlighted in the show aforementioned and can say that this news is in-accurate and bais . Rev. Jide Macaulay did not give consent to an interview with Simon Ateba and also did not pose for the photograph that was published in the paper hence a violation of rights.

For your update, I am an activist and I work to defend the rights of people who are being violated on the grounds of their sexual orientation therefore Simon, you will find yourself doomed if anything happen to Rev. Jide on the grounds this publication. This is not a threat……. but a promise.

In case you do not know, you have just violated the fundamental human rights of the subject.

Be careful on the kind of news you write and publish.

God have mercy on you all both jide macaulay, his church members and other readers who has supported his pervertic act.God has said that anyone who indulged in such act will end up in HELL FIRE burning with brimstone.Just as the people of sodom and gomorah wre consumed with fire,I can assured Jide Macaulay that both him and his followers are going to hell fire if they do not repent now!

I won’t be surprised that this is happening,we are in the last days that the bible talked about.Satan time is running out and he want to pervert the TRUTH but he has fail.Because he cannot do anything against the TRUTH but for the TRUTH.For I know that the more,he trys to lead people into lies, the TRUTH of God’s word will be revealed unto them.

Fellow brethren,we need to pray that the children of God should manifest to this generation of vipers-Romans 8:26-27

Heaven helps us in this war against the hosts of Hell.

    There is a lot we do not understand about human nature and about the cosmos or the universe we reside in. The human nature is complex. Who ever thought of DNA 30 years ago? Our cosmos is a mystery. Human sexuality is also a mystery. I am a Nigerian. I am gay. I have no apology for that. I did not acquire this nature but born gay. I am not a creature of Satan but of God. The Bible is comprehensive and total, with open ended revelation of the ability of God. Let no one box God into verses, but instead let us open our minds to understand the deep meaning that makes the bible relevant to the problem and prospect of each age. “Read the Bible without neglecting either its Divine inspiration or its cultural context.” Read the story of Sodom and Gomorrah. Understand the historical and sociological relationship between the Israelites of old and their neighbors. You also need to understand the concept of war in olden days. Then ask your self some intelligent questions;
    • Is it possible for all men in a particular city to be homosexual/heterosexual?
    • What were demand of men of Sodom from Lot and why?
    • What is the concept of rape of conquered men in war in the olden days?
    • How do we justify Lot’s offering of his daughter and our modern day demand for respect for women?
    • Jesus healed the beloved servant of a centurion. Why was the servant presented as a beloved? “In the language of the time, pais had three possible meanings depending upon the context in which it was used. It could mean “son or boy;” it could mean “servant,” or it could mean a particular type of servant — one who was “his master’s male lover.” (See note 18.)
    • Is anal sex some heterosexual engage in with their wife or girl friends covered by under the sin of sodomy?
The Bible presented us with a flat world, we have come to understand and embrace a round-like-ball world. The bible presented our earth as static, flat and the center of the universe; we have come to know that the earth is not static but rotating round the sun; nor is it flat, but round and that the sun is the center of the universe. Yet the proponent of that discovery were prosecuted and persecuted by the church and society of their time as lacking in faith. Naive faith expression is against God’s gift of intelligence. It is dangerous to human existence; it beclouds a person’s opportunity of getting absolved into the true nature of God.
Jide, more grease to your elbow for standing out as the face of the faceless.

Thank you, Rev. Macauley, for standing up for God’s LGBT children in Nigeria. May the Holy Spirt bring understanding from this article which contains so many inaccuracies and for which you did not interview. Jesus said nothing about homosexuality and never discriminated against anyone around him, but show love for all. May Nigerians learn to do the same.

Thanks John for the authenticity and clarification of the point, we need to let people know that God cannot be confined to the box or the ideology of humans, I applaud the bravery of Rev Jide Macaulay, he sounded like a person who is ready for change in the 21st century and must have considered the consequesnce of his actions. I feel that if we allow journalists to dictate what is right then we are also wrong, we also cannot allow public opinion to lead us to irrational conclusions. I feel that Rev Macaulay must have his convicted reasons or perhaps a new way of looking at the scriptures, People need to take time to consider what is being said and the attitude of the writers. What is the best way forward hatred or love? Please let us think before we indict the brave man of God.

I stand by an honourable and educated man - Rev Rowland Jide Macauley, who sees Christ as the center of his faith. This faith is a faith of love and inclusion, and Rev Rowland does not use Christianity as an stick to beat others over the head with, or as a way to shore up his own prejudices (like it was used in the past to jusitfy slavery). I am appalled by the ignorance and complacency of a people who should be VERY aware of the misuse of scripture. It was the Bible that was used to justify The Church of England’s bishops voting against the repeal of slavery in the 19th century!!!

I know Rev. Jide personally, and he is truly a man of god. He is a man of incredible faith, and I have no doubt that God has called him to the work he is doing with House of Rainbow. Rev. Jide preaches a message of liberation that is based in the Bible, and is living proof that God loves His gay children.

Galatians 3:28 - “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”

For me, Jide and his faith are a source of great inspiration.

    Motto: No Fear In Love

If people disagree that homosexual act is punishable according to the bible, then I believe that God will also punish homophobia, the unreasonable hatred of homosexual people. What then becomes the requirement by Jesus to love our neighbors as ourselves?

We have to find a balance in the debate on who is accepted to come to God. The bible said a lot of things and ancient bible scholars reported so many things in their own words and in the understanding of the society of their time. This is when we apply situational theological interpretation, in the 21st century, I feel people should take time to look at the difference of homosexual behaviors and relationships described in the bible and how they compare to those we know today. Afterall there are two side of everything, Good/Bad, Right/Left, Up/Down etc. I have never heard or read of anyone use headlines to condemn slavery, racial discrimination, oppression of women, but every day 15 million non-heterosexual people, citizen of Nigeria are oppressed by the bigoted views of religious fundamentalist.

It is important we draw a line and fine tune the balance between religious and ethical mores.

Many people have criticized me and they hardly know me, I welcome dialogue, everyone is welcomed to our church regardless of their sexual orientation, we have a particular welcome to Lesbians, Gays, Bisexual and Transgender people who are displaced in society and also unduly punished by religious communities. If anyone is willing to learn or listen to the core issues, then may be we can find the peaceful change we all deserve in the society.

The headline news on the 13th May, has allowed this issue to become more highlighted, possibly more important. Everyone is either related or knows someone who is gay or lesbian, even if this is denied that will be determined on each persons attitude to people that are non-heterosexual.

It’s time for Nigeria to take notice…Gay & Lesbian Christians go to your Church - they use the same shops - they were taught in the same schools - use the same hospitals…

Jesus said, “Who is my neighbour ?” & then quoted a parable citing the despised Samaritans as the heroes rather the “righteous” Jews. Why did he do this ? What does that teach us ?

In a culture of fear & hate - reach out with lOVE & acceptance…seek to understand rather than to condemn.

I think it is high time Nigerians come to realise that the world is changing and so are mysteries that we have hidden from ourselves, being revealed. We have hidden so many facts and truth from ourselves and this has haunted and cause so many damages on our existence as human beings and also as AFRICANS. It is high time we accept that many people exist with different approach to life and we all have our sexual orientation, which should not be a limitation to freedom as human beings. Rev Jide is a human and should be regarded as one no matter what he beilieves in. His believes would set him free as long as he practises what he preaches and be convinced about it.

Having read the above article, I can only commend Rev. Jide MacCaulay. I know the reverend personally and I can say he is one of the most upstanding person I know. With a lot of compassion and time for people, he listens and care about the people around him.

He has now confirmed to me that he is a brave man who will stand up for himself and be strong for the ones who cannot be.

For those of you talking about Sodom and Gomorah, let me say this: You don’t understand the concept of Sodom and Gomorah. To think that one gay man looking to enrich the lives of people are a threat just goes to show you how illiterate you are. There are many things in Nigeria to be saved from but the Rev is not one of them.

    Rev. Jide, I hail you.

Bigotry is bigotry, regardless of where it’s coming from. Anti-gay fundamentalists continue to selectively use regulations like Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13 to support their condemnation of gay and lesbian people. The Bible also prohibits sex during menstruation in the very same chapters (Lev 18:19; 20:18), but few Christian conservatives have mounted a campaign to expel people who violate that commandment.

The churches do not make much of an attempt to apply the commands in Leviticus to their life. They enthusiastically and openly embrace those parts of the Bible which affirm and justify their own personal, pre-existing prejudice against gay people, while declining to become as enthusiastic about verses like “For everyone who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death. He has cursed his father or his mother. His blood shall be upon him.” Imagine what would happen today if we killed every child who was disrespectful to his parents. Fundamentalists explain this verse away, saying that it is part of the Old Levitical Holiness Code and is not meant to be taken literally.

After all, how many times have you heard a fundamentalist say that eating shellfish was an abomination? (Leviticus 11:10) But they sure don’t hesitate to say it about gay people, do they? For Christians who feel Calvary wipes away the need to keep the laws in Leviticus, enforcing Levitical laws on gays and lesbians is grossly inconsistent theology. Those Christians who wish to enforce the laws of Leviticus upon gay people need to admit their theology is very inconsistent and is potentially flawed. The bible didn’t even mention Lesbians, yet they are just as ostracized as gay men.

Most Christians do not apply commands in Leviticus to their lives. They believe these laws are not binding on Christians. They do not believe they are under obligation to perform ritual hand washing, to refrain from eating pork or to abstain from sex during a woman’s period.

Leviticus 20:13: If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood [shall be] upon them.

The context of this verse is very much like the context of Leviticus Chapter 18. The authors of the New Jerome Biblical Commentary point out that Chapter 20 outlines the sanctions placed on people who violated the commands in Leviticus Chapter 18. That means the sanctions listed in Chapter 20 against same-gender sexual relationships are about sanctions placed on those who worship other gods.

We are not sure how much of an issue sex between men was at this time. The Jewish commentator Bamberger, in his commentary on Leviticus, mentions that there is no record of the death sentence being carried out by Jewish people for violating this prohibition.

This text speaks to gay people. God is calling gay people to stop the self-destructive sin of worshipping other gods. This sin robs gay people of life, of the joy of living. Gay people can heal and become healing agents when they refuse to worship pagan gods. Those pagan gods include the god of public opinion - doing what society expects, the god of family approval - doing what one’s family wants, the god of church blessing - acting exactly how the church demands and the god of following abusive or deceived pastors - attending the churches of abusive pastors and supporting their ministry with offerings. When gay people turn away from these harmful gods, they can serve the True God and humanity with liberty.

Rev Jide is a couragous man who is sharing the true word of christ with all people. I am in such awe for the willingness that he has to help in opening up the bible to all people. For far too long the Bible has been read out of context, and in doing that isolating far to many people. All people are worthy of the love and teachings of Christ. The bible has previously been used to disempower people of colour, and this is exactly the same with gay and lesbian people.

The bible is a wonderful book, and when read in context with the culture of the time, is a blessing to be used in worship, meditation and in daily lives. Blessings and love to Rev Jide and his true message of Christ.

I just woke nad its 9 am in London and i am just receiving this emails, with a friend who is British and the first thing that comes to my head is that “will Nigeria and Nigerians ever, ever see that the world is in the 21st century” I live in London now after i was chased away from Nigeria by people who are hell bent on killing me just because am vocal about my sexuality. When i came out in 2004, the press had a great time sensationisng an issue that is very thought provocking and this led to series of attack on my person.

I sometimes wonder what kind of training Nigerian press men and women had while in university, could their stupidit
y be the result of the dead Nigerian educational system? I wonder if they ever border to do research to know what is happening in the world, i had a degree in Mass communication where we were taught that as a journalist we should not be biased in our reporting.

Now to the issue at stake. rev Jide and i, have been very active and assertive about issues of sexuality, and i know that will not change, even if the coward and hypocrists in Nigeria try as much as posible to get us out of the country.I read tjhe so called report and all i can see what the issue of sexula activities. I know JIide very well that, he will never make that his central theme, the untrained or half baked hungry and fame seeking reporter is just writing what he feels his gulible readers what to read and fortunately for him, i can read the comment of people the Nigerian government has wasted money to subside education for.

On the issue of Bible and Homosexuality, i have no argument, its none of my business what the Bible say and didnt not say, my business is what i am comfortable with as human being, my my whole being is. I wonder what other thing the Bible has said that has been so obeyed by the hypocritical commentator to this write.

Your number leader against homosexuality in Nigeria is your Last pressident, who is now accused of sleeping around with his daughter in law and also gross corruptio. Sometimes i wonder if Nigerian have a sense of reasoning at all. Does Homosexuality make you poor, does it stop food from coming to your table? does it make the electricity from working? does it make oil expensive? is it the reason for bad roads in Nigeria?

I salute the courage of the likes of Funmi Iyanda, a very courageous and enlightened Nigeria, who is not gay but open in her approach to Life. Now i strongly believe there is difference between Enlightenment and Education.

I have not given up on Nigeria, i will be back and Nigerians should be ready for people like Rev Jide, Sewedo and Bisi Alimi, the time has come when we have to force it down your throat that we exist and we are humans and also we pay tax and vote in election.

Lastly……………………….. i dont believe if people fighting for God, if indeed God is almighty and if indeed he says in the Bible that the battle is his, then please let him do his deed while we do our bit by making Nigeria a safe place for all of us to live in inspite of our difference.

We shall see soon. Long Live Nigeria.

PS. I want you all to know that there are many gay Nigerian here in the UK driven away from their country and make great contribution to the UK, these are great things they would so much have love to do for their father land, but some people think they are more Nigerians than others. Hope your God is Homo loving

I am not surprised at all by some reactions coming from christians, specially the africans one. Homosexuality is something africans refuse to talk about. We are all aware that it exists regardless the denomination (catholic, evangelic, protestant, you name it), but what they all do is to ask you to supress it and then God will accept you. Please people wake up. I am asking the women to wake up first, who would like to marry an homosexual man, just for the sake of being married. Churches in africa have taugh us to live a double life just the way our culture is. Homosexuality must be dealt seriously in the churche and not just say the bible says that it is wrong, personally i dont see anywhere where the bible talks about homosexuality as we know it today. Paul was a powerful man of God but he did say many things we dont agree with today. Leviticus( don’t even get me started) mentioned a lot of other things we dont do today, why we homosexuals have to deny what we are for the sake of some misinterpretation, i am sorry . Reverend Jide well done.
May God bless you and leads . Who will preach the gospel to us if there is nobody like Reverend jide. what the others do is just to tell you that you are sick and need forgiveness and repentance, when themselves have not dealt with their own issues. We gay( or whatever you call us) are sicks and tired to be seen as 2nd class christians, no and no. We love our partners the same way heterosexuals do, we cry when we get a broken heart, we manifest jalousy the same way you straight do, so what?
Nigeria now need God’s love because a gay man spoke about the love of God for us. You know what, Nigeria needed God’s love longtime ago, and I believe Nigeria has seen God’s love manifested in this country where corruption was at its best, where churches are place to practise “gougou” , where children are killed for human sacrifices, where husbands marry many wifes, where public wealth is not divided as it should. Leave us alone. God(Jesus-Holy spirit-god the father) call people to him no one comes to God if God himself has not call them. God has called us as he did call you. So why do you want to stop us from responding to our calling. Heterosexuals focus on yourselves please. Don’t take the gay issues to make you feel better. God himself is powerful enough to deal with his ennemies.
Africa is full of gay men. I was there on holiday i saw it. They are married and want sex with you.
Another fact is if Africa does not accept homosexuality, it will be difficult to fight hiv among gay men, and bisexuals men who live there. Because a strategy which works for straight won’t work necessarily for gay men/women and bisexuals and transgender. So the issues are not only religious but also touch the social.
And more and more we have young gay men who need an example to follow. People like reverend jide will teach good ethics from the bible to them. Remember homosexuality is not wrong or bad or a sin, it is what you do with it which makes it good or bad.
I will pray for you reverend Jide. You have given me courage to be who i am and called to be.

The following is a copy of my joining address to Nigeria Village Square dated 22nd March 2008, headed “One World, Peace and Harmony”, and which is relevant to this debate: for there is no hate in Love, just as there is no fear in Love: Love one another:

I am interested in things philosophical like all of the above, and have collected wisdom from many sources since my completion of my “Peace and Harmony” artwork in 2002. This was fueled by the rage (passion) I experienced when confronted by unexpected issues which happened soon thereafter.

What I have collected should be, I believe, accessible to all - to the religious - or not - of all colours and persuasions, for it contains what I consider the best of inspired quotations from around the globe, including those from the 3000 year old Wisdom of Solomon, and from the revered books of many religions and cultures. Wisdom (truth) presented in small, easily digested, self evident, and truthful bites, such as “All people are created equal members of one human family”, “There is no hate in Love”, etc. are pretty simple, and I’m sure, easy for all to understand, unless we are above ourselves.

Having pondered these maxims for a long time (I’m now over 60 years of age, and a family person - as indeed we all are), and having looked at these issues from many many, if not all, angles, one new thought came to me (which apparently has sprung from my artwork): that all of us are both male and female inside.

From this thinking, the “outside” is merely the wrapping which hides the complexity “inside”; for we are all uniquely created. If this is the case, male = female, just as black is white, and the end is a new beginning…. And we must honour the inside, as well as the outside. No judgment by an outsider is required. Parents are for nurture, pure and simple, not for whipping and stoning.

Just how religious and other leaders (who were created to serve the people, not just to puff themselves up, through dogma) have responded to the challenge of my artwork is revealing. Unfortunately, their response has not always been to their credit, and reveals the truth that loving adults are raised in loving homes. Anything less fails a parent’s duty of care, and damage is done. Anything less than love is not holy.

I have just heard about Nigeria’s ongoing debate about same-sex relationships, and your looking for a just and equitable solution, to find a “win/win” way forward for our future, to what is but a normal living variation, like skin colour, hair texture, height, weight, etc.

By accepting that “all people are created equal members of the same human family”, and allowing same-sex attracted and same-sex loving couples the same rights as everyone else, we “give love a chance”. This, I believe is the crux, the very heart of the matter. Hate melts in the arms of Love.

I have also recently summarized many of the sayings of “The Muslim Jesus”, according to a recent book of that name by Tarif Khalidi. This Jesus is referred to time and again as “Spirit of God”, or sometimes “Word of God”, and is reported to have commended the Golden Rule: Love your neighbour as yourself (page 146). I have identified 136 variants of this saying collected from the writings of all religions, and none - (from my 5555 wisdom quotes - “Manna from Heaven”), the final entry being: “Your wounds are my wounds”.

I have also been encouraged recently to read from Islamic sources that “the highest aspect of jihad is to speak the truth in the face of tyranny”. But I am also aware that forgiveness and generosity must be nurtured, from each home outward, for the love of truth to thrive and grow in community (which literally means common unity). That is why I have joined your online community, and to support our world today.

Balance, peace and harmony can be ours too, when we see ourselves in all others…., and allow ourselves, from many, to become ONE. …………………………….

I commend Reverend Jide Macaulay and the House of Rainbow for bravely standing up like Jesus as “the face of the faceless” - your own (same sex attracted) loving brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers, uncles and aunts - and ancestors - all of whom are vital ingredients to the whole community - who have been created by God, just like anyone else, to “Live Love, and to Love only”.

May your light shine long, and brightly, Reverend Rowland Jide Macaulay, so that Nigerians can live in Peace and Harmony, also ! More grace, more love, more peace, more power ! For All (Dearly Beloved) !

Rev Jide, I just want to encourage you to stay strong in these times of unsteady waters. We serve a God that is greater than you and I. Take it to the foot of the cross and continue to focuss on those who need you to show them the way, another way. There are many paths that leads to the same destination. Don’t allow this experience deter you and remember these words:

Who taught the sun where to stand in the morning?
And who told the ocean you can only come this far?
And who showed the moon where to hide till evening?
who’s words alone can catch a falling star?

    Chorus:
Well I know my redeemer lives
    I know my redeemer lives
    All of creation testifies
    this life within me cries
    I know my redeemer lives

    ye-e-eah
    The very same God
    that spins things in orbit
runs to the weary, the worn and the weak
and the same gentle hands that hold me when I’m broken
they conquered death to bring me victory

Now I know, my redeemer lives
    I know my redeemer lives
    let all creation testify
that this life within me cries
    I-I-I know
    my redeemer

He lives, to take away my shame
and he lives, forever I’ll proclaim
the amount of pain that bought my sin
was the precious life He gave, and now he’s alive and
    there’s an empty grave!

And I know, my redeemer lives
    I know, my redeemer lives
    let all creation testify
that this life within me cries
    I-I-I know my redeemer

    I know, my redeemer lives
    I know my redeemer lives
    I know my redeemer lives
He lives, He lives, I spoke with him this morning!
He lives, I’m gonna tell everybody

I hail Rev. Jide for his courage so far. It is time that these hypocrits get it straight into their head. Look at them criticising someone they did not create.” He who is clean should cast the first stone”. If they don’t know the history of the bible, they should ask. The bible was written by man, fashioned by the royals so that their subject would abide by what they have forbidden in their land. Why are Nigerians still in the days and not move on like other giants of the world are. If Nigeria was doing better religiously, why are all the prayers we pray for our country not reaching god all these years?, even Nigeria is the only country still fighting polio and malaria. Ajibola speaks like a backyard pastor, he should go ahead with his homophobic gangs, the likes of kunle alabi, Esho sunny, Jam, Daniel usman and Naijaryder. How come people are suddenly interested in who other people sleep with than their salvation? Ajibola and co, please read the love between Jonathan and David ( properly make your research) Each of these people have had gay experiences or are even gay and have the guts to cast the first stone. It is their likes that the devil is willing to have beside him.
Nigeria needs to wake up and embrace everyone,” I mean love your neighboor as yourself”, which is the greatest commandment. I am born gay, did i make myself or would you now say the devil creates humans now. the last time i checked, it is only God who makes man and not just man, but in his own image.
Whoever wrote false things against Rev.Jide would have his life falsified too by God and if anything, I mean a scratch befalss Jide omo Macauley, to God who made me and answers my prayer as a gay man would see him through.
Life is so complicated……………………………………………………………………….when will it end?

Dear Rev Jide, I am so sorry about what happened. I was moved to tears to see what the media can do to a man just trying to do his best. I met Rev Jide in London and he saved my life, I was going to commit suicide, when a friend gave me a copy of his devotional for LGBT Christians. I am just 19 years old now, I thought i was going crazy because I had all these feelings, I did not know what to do about them. My mum is English and my Dad is Nigerian. I have always known I was different. I am not the girlie type, but I know that i am not like all the other boys. Rev Jide was the only black gay man of Nigerian descent I could identify with, he invited me to his church in London, i also went with him to places when he was being interviewed for the BBC, and many other media programmes, his life stories and struggles has been a subject of documentaries at the London Gay and Lesbian film festivals and in theatres all over England.

I truly believe his life is an example of a person, whose meat is to do the will of God, Last year i witnessed Rev Jide Macaulay received one of the highest honors when he recieved an award for Man Of The Year, for his work in Religion and inclusive gospel of Jesus for LGBT people.

Rev Jide, Thanks for saving my life and I am sure you will save more lives in Nigeria, in the name of Jesus Christ our redeemer.

I have met few finer lovers of the gospel of Jesus Christ than Rev. Jide Macaulay. He has a powerful and Spirit-inspired witness through whom Christ continues to call His ‘other sheep’ into the fold. House of Rainbow Church in Lagos is a sincere place of salvation and spiritual nourishment.

The Spirit is moving with power, manifestation and grace in the lives of many lgbt Christians, including my own life and ministry. In all things, Jesus Christ taught a ‘whosoever believes’ gospel, and through the grace that comes with that belief we are reconciled and blessed in ALL areas of our lives and relationships. God is no respecter of certain people over others, and to all lgbt people, and people of good heart reading this, know that those of us who have been out and Christian for many years have sincerely asked questions of sexuality, have (as all Christians should) been willing to lay down any part of our lives that would be a stumbling block to ourselves or others, and have had God answer time and again ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. I will bless what you offer me a hundred fold.’ Instead of shame and secrecy, God has then blessed many of us with life-partners, families, children, and church communities in which the love of Christ remains our gathering point and the source of all that is good. But perhaps more than any of these, God has blessed us with the strength to endure the wages and pressures of homophobia as we stand together in courage and hope.

Articles such as this one want to sensationalise, sexualise, and vilify other children of God. If you want a real story that could make a positive difference to Nigerians, report on the senseless rapes, murders, mob mentality, bullying, and familial abuse of perceived lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people which is on the shoulders of all who preach and teach homophobic messages. If you read the story of Sodom and Gomorrah with this in mind, it will become clear that by doing so, those who preach fear and whip up furor against what is often a minority of people within a community, are the ones acting most like the Sodomites of old.

May God bring greater understanding, a lessening of violence, and blessings on the feet of all who bring peace in Christ’s name such as Rev. Jide. God bless you my brother!

Nigerians are quick to talk about issues regarding Homosexuality, not from the right context of it all, but from the Homophobic aspect.
When would we have the right to express ourselves openely as AFRICANS, let our views be known by the government and let them respect us as nationals of our beloved country.
This are the questions most Nigerians ask, but we have failed to realise that freedom lies beneeth our hearts. Why cant people in Nigeria realise that is time for everyone to be self responsible and fight towards one great course “LOVE”. Gay nigerians have suffered a lot from discrimination and hate. The same Homophobic Nigerians talk about the BIBLE, but they fail to realise that God also frowns at every form of act contrary to his word. God cannot create and at the same time hate his creation. Gay people are Gods creation and they exists in Nigeria even centuries ago. It is high time we accept and care for one another, and let God be the judge of man. Let LOVE reign in our hearts, cause God loved us even more. God be with you Rev JIde Macualay

I fail to see why homosexuals make such a to do about their sexuality really. How many heterosexuals go around proclaiming their heterosexuality. What you choose to do with another consenting adult is your business and that person’s. All I ask , and this applies to heterosexuals too, is that you do not violate my space (i have as much right to public space as anyother) by pawing each other and making sexual in public. Save the physical expression for behind closed doors and refrain from preying on those who do not want your sexual attention whether they are the same or opposite sex.

REASONS FOR THE MUCH-A-DO ABOUT HOMOSEXUALITY
    Hello Mr. Adebayo,
The problem here is not about sex but about unreasonable criminalization of a person. As inherited from the British who was the colonial master of Nigerian, there is a penal code that can put a person behind bar for 14 years for engaging in consensual homosexual sex. The Islamic sharia law prescribed stoning to death for any homosexual person caught in the northern part of Nigeria.
Up till now, there is still a bill pending on the floor of Nigerian legislature that will ban same-sex marriage and other related homosexual acts. It will also ban any advocacy for the right of homosexual to protest persecution against them.
The pending bill suggests “ five years imprisonment for anyone who undergoes, “performs, witnesses, aids, or abets” a same-sex marriage. It would also prohibit any display of a “same-sex amorous relationship” and adoption of children by gays or lesbians…” From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

About three or four years ago, some fine and dedicated Nigerian military officers were dismissed from the military for homosexual acts. Same unjust stances are practiced by the military apparatus of many nations just as many nations of the world criminalize homosexuality. The President of Gambia recently threatened to behead all homosexuals in his domain if they fail to leave his country. Arch-Bishop Okogie also recently called for fishing out of pastors who advocates for same-sex rights, “ so that sanity can be guaranteed in Christendom.” Reported By Francis Iwuchuwku through PM. In Jamaica, such statement would be enough to cause the public to attack people they suspect to be homosexuals and kill them.
These are few reasons I can touch on now why the homosexuals make-much-a-do about their sexuality. It is a fight for my life.

Jide Macaulay, but must you use the bible to buttress your choice of sexuality which is abiblical? Because if you want to use that premise to support this, you are inadvertently laying the foundation for your position to be buried by people using the same bible to buttress their position against homosexuality. This is either a choice that you haave made or a situation you have found yourself in due to an abnormality whether you choose to accept it or not. It is not natural and you don’t have to seek help. But to expect people to accept your warped lifestyle as the gospel truth is taking it too far and making mockery of the christendom you claim to belong to. You folks should stop your attempt at manipulating people by calling people homophobes for pointing out that homosexualism is not normal. Nigerians like to experiment with everything they are intorduced to. This makes it harder to believe half the people who claim to have this abnormality did not just make a choice to be different. Making mockery of the abnormality itself. These, from my experience, are the once who shout the loudest about discrimination. Should we all accept this as a norm just because a bunch of sick people claim to be discriminated against rather than seek therapy and healing? Do we also accept bestiality as the norm too then? Where do we draw the line between going with modernity and violating the basic human norms?

I pray to God your souls to heal.

    John Ademola
You may have a point about the unfairness of the criminalization of homosexuality that I would have maybe aligned with. But if people suffering from these sicknesses were offered help, a more appropriate alternative, will they accept? Most of them will not accept because they derive pleasure in trying to attract unnecessary attention and sympathy by crying “discrimination”. They expect humans to change their perspective of what is right from wrong and embrace their sickness. Look at some of the arguments up here used to argue for a more homosexual friendly atmosphere. Some argue that the world is advancing and Nigeria has to move with it. Is this a case of trying to be more sophisticated? Should we then allow our children to prostitute because, after all, this is an era where abstinence is not chic? Arguments like these weaken the argument from the pro-homosexualism camp.

    27 May 2008 18:40

    @Stephen

Human beings who steal were created by God, but God does not like theft. This is where freewill comes to play. This argument that God created gays and can not hate his creation is sick. I have talked to a lot of gays and many of them have said they were born amidst girls and never really knew how to act as a man. Would you ascribe this to their creation? Some gay women saw how men treated women and, determining never to be treated so shabbily by a man, chose to date only women. Do you ascribe this to their creation? I could go on…

Dear Homophobes and Modern Day Pharisees,

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God’s Law.

I have learned a great deal from your speech, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that the bible clearly states it to be an abomination … End of debate.

I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some other elements of God’s Laws and how to follow them.

    1. Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Ghanaians, but not Gambians. Can you clarify? Why can’t I own Ghanaians?

    2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

    3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15: 19-24. The problem is how do I tell on Molue? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

    4. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is, my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

    5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2. clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or may be you can do it for me.

    6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish (or Catfish) is an abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don’t agree. Can you settle this? Are there ‘degrees’ of abomination?

    7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20?

    8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?

    9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

    10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev.19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? Lev.24:10-16. Couldn’t we just burn them to death at a private family affair, like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

I know you have studied these things extensively and thus enjoy considerable expertise in such matters, so I am confident you can help.

Thank you again for reminding us that God’s word is eternal and unchanging.

To Rev Jide, your courage to be the face of the faceless continues to save lives in Jesus name, Amen

It is easy for people to pick and choose which part of the bible they want to abide by. That is the brain behind the multiplication of churches born of multi-million mutations of doctrines designed to keep members in place based on the views of individual leaders and their cohorts and not on that of Christ or that of God who is love.
Many simply follow what the leadership of a church preaches as the doctrine. One would wish that individuals take time to examine each doctrine against the teachings and personality of Jesus Christ; and based on that, write their own creed.
Some of these leaderships are those who claim to speak for God. Their voices are powerful and respected even more than that of God. Some dispensations are new and others are old. Both new and old, have bloods on their hands because of the way they have handled human situations over the centuries. They passed the blood down from one generation to another. Same is their present day stand on homosexuality. They pass doctrines to put people in bondage, and keep members in their churches to service their personal leadership and material craving. Their best weapon is human sexuality of which homosexuality seems to be the top most employ.
So Eromosele, do not expect them to read and understand what meaning and relevance the passages you cited above could have on the issue of modern day human response to homosexuality. That gives you and many other well-meaning people the duty to keep repeating the message of truth about homosexuality till changes are achieved.
Thanks for the good job. Demola

Reverend Jide thank you for coming outto be an example. I commend you on your bravery. Well done!!!!!!!! I find lot of the critics on homosexuality to be hypocritical. Taking Bible passages out of context and ignoring the flaws in their own lives. I support your interpretation and that of the commentator referring to the book of Galatians with us being all one. As a fellow gay Nigerian, I cannot say how proud I feel that to hear all of you speak of such an important issue and so openly. Well done.

I am Nigerian mother and my son is gay, i am so proud of him, he is a good child and I thank God for his life, my only concern is the bigotry that comes from the church and other religious clerics on homosexuality. PLEASE LEAVE REV ROWLAND JIDE MACAULAY ALONE. Many churches discriminate against gay and lesbian people, they are our children, they work in all areas, banking, office work, airline industry, fashion, they serve people in restaurants, their sexual orientation has nothing to do with who they are and the work or contributions they are able to make to the society. My son is respectful and he is no different to my other three children, I welcome him and his boyfriend at our family table anytime, any day. God bless you.

Brother Kunle Akanbi, please search and then read every Biblical reference to Sodom and Gomorrah. Then the lightbulb will turn on that Scriptures itself helps us define what “the spirit of Sodom and Gomorrah is.” It is not what many think it is. Rather, it is a spirit of inhospitality and insensitivity to the needs of others.

Jide, this is your friend from MCC Las Vegas, George. I am proud of your work in Nigeria. I remember fondly your kindness and wonderful Christian spirit when we were seminary classmates in Berkeley, California. The people of Nigeria are fortunate that you chose to carry and share this spirit in your native land.

    – CONFRONT ♥ CONDEMNATION –

In Mosaic law, a woman caught in the act of adultery must be stoned to death. Now, what do you say ? (John 8.5)

Jesus said: Whichever one of you has committed no sin may throw the fist stone…. (John 8.7)

I pass judgment on no one. But if I were to do so, my judgement would be true, because I am not alone in this; for God who sent me is with me (John 8.15,16). What I say is true, because I know where I came from, and where I am going (John 8.14). I am the light of the world (John 8.12); I Am Who I Am (John 8.23,27). I am telling you the truth (John 8.34); the truth will set you free (John 8.31). Stop judging by external standards, and (if you must) judge by true standards (John 7.24).

And one by one, full of shame, they left (John 8.9).

The moral of the story is not changed by my slight repositioning of the text, and is supported by the following texts:

Love your neighbour as you love yourself (Luke 10.27). Do this and you will live (Luke 10.28). Loving your neighbour as you love yourself is loving the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength (Luke10.27-28). Do not judge others, and God will not judge you; do not condemn others, and God will not condemn you; forgive others, and God will forgive you. Give to others, and God will give to you (Luke 6.37).

And there are many other examples of the Golden Rule, both in the Bible, and in other major religious texts. For example, in the Bible: Leviticus 19.18, Matthew 7.12, Matthew 22.39, Mark 12.31, Luke 6.31, Romans 13.9-10, Galatians 5.14, James 2.8. This is an obviously important theme, and not called “Golden” for nothing, since it (the Rule, or measure of fullness, or ripeness), as with “gold” is pure, uncontaminated. There is no hate in Love. This is the message of Love, which is God.

Micah, in his Old Testament message has this to say:

The Lord has told us what is good. What God requires of us is this: to do what is just, to show constant love, and to live in humble fellowship with our God (Micah 6.8).

Going back in the Old testament even further (Isaiah 54.17):

No weapon formed against you shall prosper; and all tongues that rise up against you shall be condemned. This is the heritage of the Lord, and this is the vindication from me (God). Or put differently: No weapon will be able to hurt you; you will have an answer for all who accuse you. I will defend my servants and give them victory. The Lord has spoken.

How great is the grace of God (Ephesians 1.7)…. All things are done according to God’s plan and decision (Ephesians 1.11)…. For God completes all things everywhere…. (Ephesians 1.23). Everything that God has created is good; nothing is to be rejected, but everything I to be received with a prayer of thanks (1 Timothy 4.4). Watch yourself, and watch your teaching (1 Timothy 4.16). For spiritual exercise is valuable in every way, because it promises life, both for the present, and for the future (1 Timothy 4.8).

Now, unto God (you are Gods [John 10.34]), say and do what is right. Don’t use your power to cheat the poor, and don’t accept bribes. Don’t join with those who plan to commit murder or do other evil things. Then you will be safe; you will be as secure as if you were in a strong fortress. You will have food to eat and water to drink…. (Isaiah 33.15-16).

All of the forgoing is not just about you or I, but about us, together – for who among us cannot say:

Almighty, Creator, God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known and from whom no secrets are hidden, cleanse the thoughts of our hearts, by the in-spiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love each other as we love you, and worthily reflect and magnify your great, universal, Holy Name, form, being and self. (based* on Anselm of Canterbury*)

Late have we loved you, beauty so old and so new; late have we loved you. And see, you were within; always. (Augustine*) We watch without willing; we love without willing. (Valentinus*) But, we may be able to, in some way, to express what we are in no way able to express fully. (Augustine*)

We know we did not make ourselves; we were made by God, who abides for eternity. That is how it is, when at each moment, we extend our reach, and in a flash of mental energy, attain eternal wisdom, which abides beyond all things. (Augustine*)

Our One Hope (to love, and to be loved, in return) Unites All. May all of life’s blessings and benefits be yours (also).

For further proofs of Love’s Teaching, see http://www.wound-wisdom.tk

May all the blessing, honour and power so freely given to us return to the One God who gave life to us….

first of all, i will ask, where is the love of God? Don’t we think of God any more? As it gotten to a stage whereby we just act as if we created ourself? I wonder where you all get your stories from about homosexuals not been a sin. it is as plain as white or black. we should stop fooling ourselves, homosexual ism is a very great sin to God. God had to destroy a whole city for it and He is the God of yesterday, today and forever, so don’t be surprise if anything happens.

Homosexuality would certainly be a sin for you feyisetan, if you are already a happy and fulfilled and fruitfully created and living and loving heterosexual.

The issue here is in not forcing your majority heterosexuality on minority homosexuals, and criminalizing what comes naturally for them. Love cannot beget hate, for there is no hate in Love. Hate is the absence of Love. Hate melts in the arms of Love. Love is pure, and there is nothing wrong with that ! So long as the sexual act between two a-z sexual people is mutually desired and fulfilling, there is no fault to be found. This is entirely consistent with Islamic thinking :

“Hurt no one so that no one may hurt you” (from the last sermon of Muhammad) and “Do unto all as you would wish to have done unto you: Reject for others that what you would reject for yourself (in this case, your judgment).

“Show forgiveness, speak for justice, and avoid the ignorant. Share belief in human responsibility, consequences for good and evil deeds, moral teachings, and other values – such as love, peace and justice. Target racism and intolerance, for The command to be merciful applies to all.

“The focus of life is not religion. Religion is a tool to focus humanity. It is a way to read the world, but it is not the main thing. It is your efforts in life; your humanity. It’s OK whoever you are; focus on humanity. The Creator wishes human life to be enriched… by the “brotherhood” of all races and nations.

“So long as people suffer abuses, they cannot achieve their full potential, as free and equal members of society. The triumph of humanity over injustice, inequality, and inhumanity, all begins with an idea: a sense of justice and the relentless pursuit of compassion and kindness to preserve human dignity.

“Regard power as a trust, in the belief that one has to render an account of one’s actions.

“Trusts’ fulfillment must be guided by a sense of responsibility, beyond mere conformity to set rules. We are all one people. We have come to a better day; a day where skin colour no longer matters; a day where all people are aware of their dignity, and are aware that each and every one on this wonderful planet has the potential to shine, in the light of God’s pure and brilliant light. Let us all work towards it.”

How do I know this, you might wonder ? As I have extracted it from the wisdom contained in “MUSLIMS AUSTRALIA” issue number 7, dated March 2009, as published by the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils ( see http://www.afic.com.au ), which also says:

“Well educated, balanced individuals can make a positive contribution to their families, community and society. Whoever recommends and helps an evil cause shares in its burden, but Whoever helps another will be granted help from God.
Wisdom brings peace, security and justice. Therefore, Work for social and economic justice, minority empowerment, and reconciliation, and Work together to establish peace, justice and prosperity… worldwide.

“Love finds its greatest form by loving good. Loving one’s neighbours recognizes that there is more than one path to the truth.

“Injustice shall be darkness on the Day of Judgment. Those who engage in attacks against innocent persons shall stand condemned for God is all-knowing, all-aware. Therefore, Condemn all forms of violence, the contemptuous disregard of international conventions and the poisoning of regional relations. Demand that justice be met for ALL… for It is an inherent right of all human beings.

“All human beings are equal. Enjoin what is good; struggle against the vices. Violence against women finds no roots in religion. In the matter of modesty, All are at liberty to decide for themselves their individual comfort levels and the choice of their dressing. A justly balanced community bears witness to the truth. A logical fruit of a merciful attitude is to love…. Therefore, love All, for A true believer is always prepared, after meeting the needs of family, to assist other people in need.”

Only a few joining words have been added by me to knit things seamlessly together. To see “which words” you can take a look at my “Grand Perspectives” post at AfricanLoft.com where I have presented the above in a slightly different order, where the joining words are shown in italix.

It seems to me that all people of goodwill can easily relate to this, no matter what faith tradition we spring from. There really is no division between us: “All people are created equal members of one human family”.

And whenever, or wherever we cannot love, we must at the very least, respect, and do no harm - for God is among us, and within us - all of us. That is why “loving your neighbour as yourself IS loving the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength (Luke10.27-28). If we do this, we will live. And we will not judge. Even Jesus didn’t. But what he did speak about a lot was hypocrisy. Rape is rape is rape (an outrage against humanity; an abuse of power, one over the other). Love is love is LOVE. Love IS Good, Love IS God. No exceptions.

Going back to Islamic teaching as per “Muslims Australia”:

“Love finds its greatest form by loving good. Loving one’s neighbours recognizes that there is more than one path to the truth.

“Injustice shall be darkness on the Day of Judgment. Those who engage in attacks against innocent persons shall stand condemned for God is all-knowing, all-aware. Therefore, Condemn all forms of violence, the contemptuous disregard of international conventions and the poisoning of regional relations. Demand that justice be met for ALL… for It is an inherent right of all human beings.

“Humanity is like a bouquet of flowers, in which each flower is beautiful in its own right, yet, the combination of all flowers, and the rich diversity of their colours and forms, is more beautiful.

“Man” is in a state of loss, except such as have faith, and do righteous deeds, and join together in the mutual teaching of Truth, and of Patience, and Constancy. Violence and killing have no place in solving the problems of “man”.”

Let us all say “Amen !” and “Praise God !” for that ! And as we “give thanks” let our heart hands mindfully work for the common good - of ALL, so that “all the blessing, honour and power so freely given to us returns to the One God who gave life to US….”
